More than 25 percent of the coaching staff of the 2022 Minnesota Vikings has left the team for another coaching opportunity this offseason.
Turnover for the Minnesota Vikings is certainly something that has been expected for the team during the 2023 offseason. However, most of the turnover for the Vikings this year was expected to have to do with the players, and not the coaches.
So far though, a significant number of assistant coaches have parted ways with Minnesota this year, and the number could potentially continue to grow in the future.
On Friday, it was revealed that Jeremy Modkins is the latest assistant coach to depart from the Vikings this offseason, as he is reportedly heading to take a job on the coaching staff at Rice University, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Modkins spent the 2022 season as a defensive assistant for Minnesota.
Minnesota Vikings have now parted with 7 different assistant coaches in 2023
With the news of Modkins leaving, the Vikings have now seen seven members of their coaching staff depart from the franchise since the end of the 2022 season.
Below is the list of Minnesota assistant coaches that have left the team this year.
- Ed Donatell – Defensive Coordinator (fired)
- Greg Manusky – Inside LBs coach (parted ways)
- Jerrod Johnson – Assistant QBs coach (hired as the Indianapolis Colts QBs coach)
- Sam Siefkes – Assistant LBs coach (hired as the Arizona Cardinals LBs coach)
- A’Lique Terry – Assistant DL coach (hired as the University of Oregon OL coach)
- Ben Kotwica – Assistant Special Teams coach (hired as the Denver Broncos Special Teams coach)
- Jeremy Modkins – Defensive assistant (hired as Rice University’s CBs coach)
So far, the Vikings have already added three new coaches to their staff and promoted another current coach to help make up for some of the departures this offseason. They include the following.
- Brian Flores – Defensive Coordinator (with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022)
- Mike Siravo – Inside LBs coach (with the Carolina Panthers in 2022)
- Lance Bennett – Quality control – defense (with the Miami Dolphins in 2021)
- Grant Udinski – Assistant QBs coach (promoted)
Continuity is a big part of success in the NFL, both on the field and on the coaching staff. So it will be interesting to see how these coaching departures and additions impact Minnesota during the 2023 season.
