4 Vikings free-agent signings you (probably) forgot about
By Adam Patrick
Jim McMahon – QB (1993)
One of Minnesota’s first-ever free-agent signings was former Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon.
McMahon was, of course, part of the Bears in 1985 when he helped them win their franchise’s first and only Super Bowl. But by 1993, his career in the NFL was winding down, and he was just looking for a team that would let him continue to play football for a living.
The Vikings became that team in 1993 and McMahon began that season as the team’s starting quarterback. He ended up starting a total of 12 games during the 1993 campaign, and during eight of these matchups, Minnesota was able to come away with a victory.
McMahon didn’t exactly light up the stat sheet during his time with the Vikings in 1993, as he only threw for 1,968 yards, nine touchdowns, and eight interceptions. But he did enough to help Minnesota earn a spot in the 1993 playoffs.
