Does free-agent quarterback Cam Newton want to be the backup behind Kirk Cousins for the Minnesota Vikings during the 2023 season?

Earlier this offseason, the Minnesota Vikings were able to re-sign quarterback Nick Mullens, and most are assuming that he will be the backup behind Kirk Cousins for the second year in a row. But if the opportunity presented itself, would the Vikings be interested in bringing in someone like Cam Newton to compete for the backup job this summer?

Well, on Wednesday, Newton shared a video on his YouTube channel where he named a group of 10 quarterbacks that he would be willing to be the backup for next season.

Cam Newton does not include Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins on his list

Of the quarterbacks Newton listed off, Minnesota’s Cousins was not among them. This doesn’t mean that Newton is unwilling to sign with the Vikings, it just clearly isn’t his first choice, or his 10th.

But at this point in his career, he really can’t be too picky about where he plays if he wants to remain in the NFL. Newton will turn 34 in May and he hasn’t thrown for more than eight touchdowns in a single season since 2018.

Sure, he has years of experience in the league that could help with the development of a young quarterback. But his on-field abilities just aren’t anywhere close to what they were even a few seasons ago.

When it comes to Minnesota, they might be interested in signing Newton if Mullens or Cousins suffers an unfortunate injury before the start of the 2023 season. Other than that though, the former NFL MVP winding up with the Vikings this year seems highly unlikely.
