For some players, the path to the NFL is a clear one. High-profile collegiate players go on to become top draft picks and may not have to put in the kind of effort that an undrafted free agent has to do to earn a roster spot. Fans learned that when looking at two recently retired contributors for the Minnesota Vikings.

At the conclusion of the 2025 NFL season, fullback C.J. Ham and wide receiver made the tough decision to retire from the league. Their contributions to the Vikings and the community did not go unnoticed and were a major part of their retirement celebration on Thursday in Eagan, Minnesota.

Road to the NFL was not easy for former Minnesota Vikings standout WR Adam Thielen and versatile FB C.J. Ham

Thielen and Ham didn't have the kind of celebrated arrival that many notable players get when they enter the NFL. Both were undrafted free agents with the Vikings who went on to be Pro Bowl-level players, but had to fight to get their spot and hold on to their roles in the league.

During their joint retirement press conference on Thursday, the two were asked about arriving in professional football, having to work their way from the practice squad to a starting role, and eventually becoming Pro Bowlers. In particular, they were asked what kept them motivated and driven to strive for excellence.

Ham answered first. He said he was willing to do what was necessary and not let intrusive thoughts interfere with his work. He also stressed knowing his role and doing that to the best of his ability to help the team and coaches until opportunities arose for him.

Next, Thielen stressed the importance of having a "dog mentality" mindset that allowed him to push himself to the next level and make it impossible to deny him opportunities. He understands that mindset can be interpreted in many different ways, but staying focused and tough while giving it his all paid off hugely.

The former Vikings receiver added that he needed to be a different person on the football field. He might be a husband, father, and community member, but when he took the field, it was time to do business and execute what he had trained to do. He also emphasized that those moments include practices and drills throughout the week.

Adam Thielen and C.J. Ham were special players for the Minnesota Vikings who should be remembered fondly by fans. Their success stories are inspirational and prove that hard work and dedication will pay off in the long run.
