The Minnesota Vikings really put themselves out there in the 2026 NFL Draft when they took a massive risk on selecting Florida defensive tackle Caleb Banks in the first round.

While Banks has all the talent to be a sure-fire first-round pick, the concern with him is his broken foot, which he has suffered twice since the start of the college football season last year.

Banks's former head coach, Bill Napier, recently talked to ESPN's Adam Rittenberg and opened up about his former defender and how he can be a difference maker if he stays healthy.

"The complicated part is the injury; it was very unfortunate. Obviously, it would have made a huge difference in our team to have a first-round draft pick type of caliber, an explosive player.

Caleb can play on third down. I think that makes him different. Not only is he 6-6, 325, but he's got the twitch to be a matchup issue on third down as a rusher."

Minnesota Vikings hope Billy Napier is right about Caleb Banks

If Vikings fans want to see the true potential that Banks has, watch the tape of his 2024 season, which really showed the deadly combination of him being a run stopper and rushing the passer. He racked up 21 tackles, 4.5 sacks, one pass deflection, and one forced fumble that year.

His size and skill set are there to make him an elite defensive tackle in the NFL, as he's got all the traits to be a nightmare to block. The stat sheet might not wow people, but he is a true disruptor in the middle that can blow up any play.

Minnesota certainly needs him to be the man in the middle, as they lost key players like Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave, who were released by the Vikings to save money. Banks will come in, replace those guys, and work with Jalen Redmond to make this defensive front younger, faster, stronger, and more athletic.

Among the risks taken in the NFL Draft, Banks to the Vikings in Round 1 is the biggest, but it also has the biggest upside if they are right about how good he can be.

Lingering foot injuries are a major concern, especially for a man of his size, but Banks could end up being the next great young defensive lineman that Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores develops into a starter.
