Caleb Williams says frustration over leaving his teammates drove his emotional exit after a hamstring injury in the Minnesota Vikings’ 9-3 Week 2 win over Chicago. His explanation revisited a pre-draft conversation with Minnesota as Chicago prepares for his expected return against Atlanta.

Williams described the reaction in comments shared by FOX. “I'm always going to show emotion, especially when I can't be out there with the guys when something like that happens.”

Williams recalled Minnesota asking what separated him from other prospects. “When I went through the draft process, I went to two places. The two places were here, and I popped over to the Vikings for a visit.”

Chicago had scored 59 points against Carolina a week earlier. Brian Flores’ defense held the Bears to three before Williams’ fourth-quarter hamstring injury, mixing pressure and coverage to deny easy answers.

Rain at Soldier Field helped Minnesota’s defense, too. The Vikings needed three Will Reichard field goals to win, so their offense didn’t exactly leave Chicago with bragging rights.

Minnesota’s pre-draft question drew an answer about commitment. “They asked me, 'What's the difference between you and everyone else?' It's because I care about the team, the organization, winning, being out there, my teammates, all of that.”

Caleb Williams’ absence tested Chicago’s pursuit of the Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota won that Week 2 game with Carson Wentz filling in for Kyler Murray. The Vikings are now 5-0 entering their bye, but they’ve needed their own quarterback depth to get here. Chicago deserves the same consideration. A young quarterback still loses practice reps with his receivers and opportunities to run his offense against different defenses while sidelined.

Case Keenum started Chicago’s win over Philadelphia, and Tyson Bagent beat the Jets before starting the loss to Green Bay. The Bears went 2-1 in Williams’ three missed games. For Ben Johnson, getting his starter back offers a chance to build continuity after repeatedly changing quarterbacks.

Williams described how much being sidelined hurt. “I care, and that's the biggest thing. This is what I love to do. This puts a smile on my face. It's everything to me. And so not being able to be out there was frustrating.”

Williams practiced fully on Friday and was officially questionable for Atlanta. NFL Network and ESPN reported on Saturday that Chicago plans to start him today. Williams rushed for 107 yards across his two appearances before the injury.

Atlanta will test whether Williams can plant and escape pressure over four quarters. His return becomes more consequential for Minnesota if Johnson can again threaten defenses with both the called play and the scramble after it breaks down.
