Whether or not people believe that the quarterback competition for the Minnesota Vikings is genuine, it does appear as though head coach Kevin O'Connell will make his decision on the starter based on what he sees during training camp and the preseason.
It will be either former Arizona Cardinals No. 1 overall draft pick or Vikings first-round selection J.J. McCarthy who gets the starting nod. Depending on who is named the starter, the 2026 NFL season could look vastly different for the purple and gold.
Everyone seems to have an opinion on the competition. While many believe that it is Murray's job to lose, there is still a chance that McCarthy will show development from his inconsistency and ineffectiveness last season.

FOX9 KMSP recently shared a video where they spoke with former Minnesota Vikings long snapper Mike Morris. Jim Rich asked the former special-teamer about the team's current quarterback situation, and his response was intriguing.
"It's gonna be interesting."
Rich shared a concern about the team splitting into "factions" based on the quarterbacks and asked Morris to elaborate on the situation. The former sports radio analyst and 12-year NFL veteran had some thoughts on the matter.
"Whenever I played, and whoever we had playing quarterback, no matter what the situation was, we had a competition.
All those people had to compete for their jobs, but it didn't seem to me, at least, the past year or two that we've had competition at the quarterback spot.
Everywhere else, you see the competition still occurs, but it seems like something was happening at quarterback that didn't seem right."
Morris continued, elaborating on why the quarterback situation hasn't felt like a competition lately.
"To me, it seemed like a little bit 'we'll take care of it over here, and we'll sideline it over here. Protect it for a while and let it come back when we think it's ready to go.:
Essentially, Morris appears to want the quarterback position to be earned rather than anointed. There is nothing wrong with hoping that J.J. McCarthy will develop into a franchise quarterback, but you can't force him into that role and assume he will be productive.
Based on what fans have seen from the two quarterback options so far, it would be easy to assume that Murray has the advantage in the competition based on his experience, but that doesn't mean the young University of Michigan National Champion won't surprise people and win the starting gig.
The Minnesota Vikings can't afford to gamble that things will fall into place for them. They have a strong defense and talented players who are determined to make some noise during the 2026 NFL season, and they will need solid quarterback play to be competitive this year.
