Talking to the media can be like a tightrope walk for NFL players. When leaving a team like the Minnesota Vikings, everything that a player says can be interpreted in many different ways, depending on who hears it.
While a player might think they are talking about their excitement to play for their new team, their words could easily be taken as a shot against their former team instead. That is exactly what happened with a former Vikings defensive lineman recently.
During his introductory press conference with the Cincinnati Bengals, defensive tackle Jonathan Allen threw some unintentional shade at J.J. McCarthy and the Minnesota Vikings offense.
Defensive tackle Jonathan Allen was released by the Minnesota Vikings this offseason and didn't stay a free agent for long. The veteran defender signed a two-year, $28 million contract
with the Cincinnati Bengals.
During his introductory press conference, the 31-year-old defensive lineman talked about his connections with the Bengals and passion for the game, but Vikings fans might not like what he had to say about the offenses of his current and former teams.
In an article on the Sports Illustrated website, author Jay Morrison
shared some of Allen's words about his new team from the press conference.
“Having the ability to play with a guy like Joe Burrow and that offense,” Allen began. “You know they’re gonna put points up, you know we’re gonna be playing with the lead. So allowing us as a defense and defensive line to get after the quarterback was definitely enticing.”
There is no doubt that the Vikings' offense struggled in 2025, but this statement discounts playing with many immensely talented players in a purple-and-gold jersey. While Ja'Marr Chase is a force to be reckoned with in Cincinnati, Justin Jefferson is at least equally amazing as a wide receiver in Minnesota.
Comparing Joe Burrow to J.J. McCarthy and Minnesota's quarterbacks last season is understandable. Last year, Burrow played in eight games for the Bengals, where he threw for 1,809 yards, 17 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
Meanwhile, McCarthy played in 10 games for the Vikings. He passed for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. While he has a lot of room to improve, he will likely sit behind potential starter Kyler Murray in Minnesota in 2026.
Jonathan Allen may not want to pull up tape on the last meeting between the Minnesota Vikings and the Cincinnati Bengals. The game on Sept 21, 2025, was a one-sided affair with the purple and gold embarrassing the Jake Browning-led Bengals 48-10 in front of an electric crowd at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minnesota.
