Veteran running back Ty Chandler is reportedly signing with the New Orleans Saints. This marks the end of his time with the Minnesota Vikings — and the start of what appears to be an uphill battle to relevancy.

Financial details of the agreement weren't disclosed, but Nick Underhill of the New Orleans Football Network broke the news of Chandler joining the Saints. The Vikings' 2022 fifth-round pick now heads to the Big Easy, where he will be part of an extremely crowded backfield. It's an odd fit for all parties involved, suggesting a follow-up move could be coming, though that's neither here nor there.

Nevertheless, after a rather unceremonious exit from the Vikings, Chandler lands another opportunity to make a name for himself in New Orleans.

Ty Chandler leaves Minnesota Vikings, questionably joins New Orleans Saints

It remains unclear what kind of market there was for Chandler's services, if any. Yet, judging by his decision to join a Saints squad that currently has six backs on its 2026 payroll, there probably weren't many suitors. He basically settled for a shot to compete for a roster spot in New Orleans.

The Saints gave Louisiana native Travis Etienne a boatload of money for a free agency homecoming this offseason. They've also invested draft capital in the position in recent years, namely 2023 third-rounder Kendre Miller and, most recently, 2025 fifth-round selection Devin Neal. Moreover, Audric Estime and Evan Hull have also carved out rotational/special teams roles.

Oh, and perhaps the biggest elephant in the room is longtime Saints tailback Alvin Kamara; his future remains a massive variable. The five-time Pro Bowler went on the record to say that he'd "go drink a piña colada somewhere" back in October if traded. So, despite the questions about what comes next for him, it may be New Orleans or nowhere.

With that in mind, Chandler figures to have his work cut out for him to stick around with the Saints. Etienne's salary indicates that he will handle the bulk of the responsibilities as a runner and pass-catcher. With that in mind, the former must stand out by doing the little things, whether it be as a blocker or in the kicking game.

A knee injury derailed Chandler this past season. He ran for just 47 scoreless yards on 17 carries and caught three passes for an additional 11 yards. However, we've seen him showcase his blazing 4.38-second 40-yard dash speed when right.
