For the last few years, Justin Jefferson and Jaire Alexander have often been at the center of multiple matchups between the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers.
Both have gotten the best of each other at times, and it's led to both Vikings and Packers fans scrambling for excuses whenever the rival player is the one to outperform the guy on their favorite team.
Earlier this week, NFL Media's Ian Rapoport revealed Green Bay is open to trading Alexander this offseason, and they've already had conversations with other teams about working out a deal that involves the Pro Bowl cornerback.
Following this report, some have been thinking about possible landing spots for Alexander this year, and unsurprisingly, Minnesota has been mentioned as a potential destination.
Should the Minnesota Vikings be interested in making a trade for Green Bay Packers CB Jaire Alexander?
CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin recently listed five teams that could trade for the veteran Packers cornerback this offseason, and he included the Vikings in a group that also consisted of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Pittsburgh Steelers, Las Vegas Raiders, and Atlanta Falcons.
Benjamin shared why he thinks Alexander and Jefferson could potentially go from hated rivals to members of the same locker room this year.
"Would the Packers prefer to deal their former star inside the NFC North? Probably not. But the Vikings have pulled this before, convincing the Detroit Lions to cough up T.J. Hockenson.
And if Minnesota can't retain some of its top free agents in the secondary, including No. 1 corner Byron Murphy Jr. and emergent safety Camryn Bynum, they could pivot to give coordinator Brian Flores an even higher-upside option."
According to OverTheCap.com, Alexander will have a cap hit of just under $25 million for next season if he remains with Green Bay. If he's traded, he'll have cap hits of $17.5 million in 2025 and $19.5 million in 2026 for the team that acquires him.
Due to injuries, the 28-year-old corner has only appeared in a total of 16 games for the Packers (including the playoffs) during the last two seasons. But when Alexander has actually been on the field in the last two years, he's still been one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.
In 2023, his PFF defensive grade ranked 22nd out of 127 qualifying corners, and in 2024, that ranking jumped to 17th. So, it's clear that he can still play at a high level when he's able to stay off the injury report.
As Benjamin pointed out, if Byron Murphy Jr. leaves in free agency this offseason, Minnesota might be able to make up for his departure by trading for Alexander. If Murphy re-signs with the Vikings, however, they likely wouldn't have much interest in making a deal for the Green Bay cornerback.
So, if Murphy ends up moving on from Minnesota in a few weeks, Alexander could potentially be the next player to trade in his ugly green and gold uniform for a beautiful purple and gold jersey.
