When it comes to Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell giving up the facade and naming a starting quarterback, everyone knows it's the sooner, the better. The balance of first-team snaps thus far in training camp has favored Kyler Murray, revealing the inevitable outcome.
Entering camp, the general vibe among reporters covering the Vikings was that a starting quarterback (likely Murray) would be named by somewhere around joint practices against the Baltimore Ravens before the second preseason game.
J.J. McCarthy hasn’t changed the expected outcome for the Minnesota Vikings
At the same time, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network suggested otherwise.
"For the Minnesota Vikings, one of the biggest storylines of all of training camp, they have their quarterback battle as well. Is it Kyler Murray? Is it J.J. McCarthy? That is gonna be going on throughout camp, through the preseason games, right up to the start of the season."
Even as he visited TCO Performance Center as part of his training camp rounds recently, Rapoport sounded like he owed J.J. McCarthy's agent a favor.

Anyone who hung onto the idea McCarthy could win the starting job has now given up on it, due to his failure to clearly outdo Murray thus far in training camp.
Whether Rapoport genuinely thought McCarthy could win the job is unclear, since opinion and analysis aren't core parts of his job as an information provider/de facto PR agent. But during an in-studio appearance on Sunday, as he was asked for insight on some quarterback battles around the league, he ultimately couldn't keep up the facade.
"It feels like it's leaning Kyler Murray in Minnesota", Rapoport said. "Now, it's been an open competition. Really what this organization wants to do is view all the different checkpoints, and make sure they're getting all the information possible."
Rapoport said he expected the competition to extend into preseason games, to see what each quarterback is like "when the lights come on." He also mentioned McCarthy's lack of experience, as if it were something unknown or new.
There isn't really any doubt about Murray's ability to carry his camp performance to a preseason game setting, so that initial sentiment doesn't apply to him beyond seeing how he operates the offense in a game.
Circumstances, like the Arizona Cardinals paying him most of his money for this year, made Murray into the prominent available quarterback the Vikings could afford to bring in. An outcome other than him being the starter has never been in play, barring injury or McCarthy somehow looking like a totally different quarterback.
Rapoport landed on the bottom line for the Vikings' quarterback situation, also as if it was something new he had to talk himself into.
"To me, Kyler was their hand-picked QB in free agency; he has done nothing to disappoint, it feels like he has the advantage here.”
