Jadeveon Clowney won't be coming to the Minnesota Vikings after all. NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo reported on August 2 that the veteran edge rusher agreed to terms with the Houston Texans, sending him back to the franchise that drafted him first overall in 2014.
Clowney became a popular target after Minnesota moved on from Jonathan Greenard rather than meet his asking price. The fit was easy to picture. Brian Flores has a habit of finding useful jobs for veteran pass rushers, and Clowney could've handled a rotational role without carrying the defense on every down.
Houston gets a 33-year-old defender coming off 8.5 sacks for the Dallas Cowboys in 2025. Clowney also produced 10 quarterback hits, 12 tackles for loss, four passes defended, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. Those numbers would've played nicely as Minnesota's third edge option.

Turner now has a cleaner path to the starting job opposite Andrew Van Ginkel. The 2024 first-round pick has flashed in limited work under Flores, and an expanded role was coming whether Clowney signed or not. Minnesota won't have the luxury of placing a proven veteran behind him unless they explore signing someone like a Leonard Floyd, Haason Reddick, Von Miller or Joey Bosa.
Turner's development makes the miss easier to absorb, although relying on projection brings more uncertainty than adding Clowney's résumé. Van Ginkel can move around the formation, which gives Flores flexibility, but the defense needs another rotational rusher to keep both starters fresh and cover injuries and fatigue over a long season.
Clowney has totaled 450 tackles, 66.5 sacks, 36 passes defended, 16 forced fumbles and 11 fumble recoveries across 153 career games. His career highs include 59 tackles in 2017, 9.5 sacks in both 2017 and 2023, four forced fumbles in 2019 and three fumble recoveries in 2018. He's never reached double-digit sacks.

Clowney went from Houston to the Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers and Dallas before circling back. His three Pro Bowl selections came from 2016 through 2018, so Houston is buying experience and recent rotational production rather than peak form.
Houston can use Clowney as a veteran rotational rusher after his productive season with the Cowboys. Clowney will report back to the franchise where he spent his first five NFL seasons from 2014 through 2018.
