The Minnesota Vikings 2025 free agent class had plenty of lemons, but few were as sour as Javon Hargrave.
A two-time Pro Bowler, Hargrave didn’t have the intended impact during his time in Minnesota, collecting just 3.5 sacks in 16 games, which caused the Vikings to cut bait and release the 32-year-old one year into a two-year, $30 million contract.
Upon the news of his release, Hargrave reposted an X user who said: “If you’re DL and wanna get to the QB, Brian Flores’ system is not for you.” He also signed with the Green Bay Packers once the move became official, reuniting with Jonathan Gannon, who got the most out of Hargrave during his time in Philadelphia.
That timeline set up a perfect “revenge game” narrative as Hargrave battled the Vikings in Week 1, but he failed to make lemonade out of the situation, managing just one tackle and no quarterback pressures on 30 snaps, according to PFF.
In the end, Hargrave was barely noticeable on the Packers’ front, and it’s another sign that the Vikings were right to move on from a player who failed to live up to expectations.
Javon Hargrave’s frustration ignores the reality of the Minnesota Vikings’ defense
Like many acquisitions during the 2025 free agent period, Hargrave was expected to solve a major weakness.
The interior of the Vikings’ defensive line had trouble creating pressure in years past, and Hargrave’s resume with 49 sacks in 147 career games was supposed to give Flores’s defense a new element. But when he got to Minnesota, the production just wasn’t there.
According to PFF, Hargrave managed just 31 pressures on 295 pass-rushing snaps in Minnesota last season.
While those numbers look solid, Hargrave had seven pressures and a pair of sacks on 33 pass-rushing snaps in the Vikings' season-opening win over the Chicago Bears, meaning he managed just 24 pressures on 262 pass-rushing snaps over the final 16 games.
That drop-off had a reasonable excuse due to Hargrave’s age and the fact that he was coming off a partially torn triceps suffered during the 2024 season with the San Francisco 49ers. But his repost after news of his release hit the internet suggests he wasn’t happy with how he was utilized.
That led to Hargrave receiving a call from Gannon, who recruited him to join his defense.
On paper, it appeared to be a great match, as Hargrave had two of the best years of his career while Gannon was the defensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles, recording 18.5 sacks and earning his first Pro Bowl appearance between the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
It was an even better match with Hargrave’s comments about their relationship upon signing with Green Bay.
“My old DC, Jonathan Gannon. I had my best years with him. He did a lot of things to give me ops, give us all ops. I think his defense fits my style, which is what I like to do.”
While Hargrave believes Flores was the reason for his disappointing year in Minnesota, he may have missed the point. A 2023 story by ESPN’s Kevin Seifert quoted former Vikings defensive tackle Harrison Phillips talking about his role in the defense and how it required a level of buy-in from the players involved.
“My initial thoughts selfishly were not super high about this.
It was like, ‘Dang, the way it’s being described is you’re an edge setter, you’re a cutback player. It seemed like there was not going to be a lot of production through the system.
But then I saw the problems it was giving our offense in [spring and summer practices]...and so I thought we were really on to something and obviously it’s been kicking ass.”

Hargraves’s reluctance to buy into Flores’s system had him one-and-done in Minnesota, and while he believed reuniting with Gannon would help get him on track, Vikings fans may have had trouble noticing him in the same way they did a year ago.
Meanwhile, on the other sideline, the Vikings defensive linemen did just fine. Levi Drake Rodriguez was the most pleasant surprise, racking up three pressures and a sack. But Jalen Redmond also had a strong game with a pair of pressures, three tackles, and a run stop.
But the most glaring example came from rookie Domonique Orange.
While the Iowa State product was only on the field for 22 snaps, he made one of the biggest plays of the game, stopping Jordan Love on a quarterback sneak with 13:17 to play.
That stop set up the Vikings for a go-ahead touchdown drive and may have been more impactful than anything Hargrave did during his time in a Vikings jersey.
Perhaps it was a slow day at the office for Hargrave, who arguably has been slowing down since he last played for Gannon in 2022.
But it was also evidence that maybe Flores wasn’t the reason he failed in Minnesota and could be a sign that the Packers are about to learn what the Vikings did about Hargrave last season.
