J.J. McCarthy's rough outing against the Baltimore Ravens had a more uncomfortable subplot than just five completions in 10 attempts. Kevin O'Connell said in his postgame press conference that the Minnesota Vikings planned to give their young quarterback another series against the Baltimore Ravens, but his first quarter ended after 18 snaps because he was hobbled. For a quarterback who needs every available rep, another shortened preseason appearance helps nobody.
O'Connell watched McCarthy absorb three hits and a sack during the 13-3 loss to Baltimore. Four defenders converged on his final dropback, and McCarthy got up slowly. Protection deserves scrutiny, but the ball often had time to leave his hand before the punishment came.
McCarthy, 23, owns a 6-4 record in 10 NFL starts. His 2025 totals of 1,632 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, 57.6 percent completions, 181 rushing yards and four rushing scores are all career highs because his torn right meniscus erased his rookie season. Those official career numbers also show how little margin he has for more missed work. His single-game career high is 250 passing yards, set at Dallas in Week 15, while his best touchdown total is three against Washington. Both games showed the quicker, on-time version Minnesota needs to see more often.
J.J. McCarthy's late trigger keeps hurting the Minnesota Vikings
McCarthy too frequently waits for a receiver to become visibly open before releasing the ball. NFL windows close as a quarterback confirms what he sees. By the time McCarthy commits, a clean pocket can become crowded, the throw gets tougher, and a defender has a free shot at his legs or ribs.
Anticipation would help the entire operation. Throwing toward the spot a receiver is about to reach lets the route timing beat coverage and makes the offensive line's job look much cleaner. Holding the ball invites fans to blame every hit on the blockers, even when the quarterback helped create the mess.
McCarthy's injury file makes that habit harder to dismiss. The meniscus cost him 2024, then a high right ankle sprain, concussion and hairline fracture in his throwing hand interrupted 2025. His battle for a spot behind Kyler Murray requires live reps, but his body hasn't allowed many.
"It's always a moving target, maybe one more drive would have been great to get him based upon where he was snapcount-wise, but he was a little hobbled there. I'll have an update for you but he seemed to be fine." - Head Coach Kevin O'Connell on J.J. McCarthy pic.twitter.com/Op9JRiNiJa

O'Connell wanted one more possession Saturday, which would've pushed McCarthy beyond four series. The quarterback's slow rise after that four-man convergence changed things, and O'Connell decided he'd seen enough for one afternoon.
It will be interesting to see when and how often McCarthy plays in Minnesota’s final game of the preseason against the Denver Broncos on Friday night.
