Being on the losing end of a competition isn't easy for anyone. So, if J.J. McCarthy wanted to come out on Wednesday and ask the Minnesota Vikings to trade him following their decision to name Kyler Murray the team's No. 1 quarterback, no one would have been surprised, and many probably wouldn't have blamed him.
But that's not the type of person McCarthy is, and that was made clear on Wednesday with his first comments to the media since losing the Vikings' quarterback battle.
"Look, a decision was made that was out of my control. Obviously, every competitor wants to play. But moving forward, it's about continuing to work hard and just staying ready for when my number's called."

As it was mentioned earlier, no one would be surprised if McCarthy wanted out of Minnesota following Tuesday's news, but when asked about that on Wednesday, it didn't seem like a change of scenery is something that he wants anytime soon.
"This is a place I want to be. I love every single person in this building. I love the state. I love the fanbase, and I'm going to continue to just do whatever I can for this team and this organization."
Now, does this mean that McCarthy is still going to be with the Vikings when they step on the field for their regular-season opener against the Green Bay Packers in a few weeks?
It's definitely not a guarantee, but his comments on Wednesday at least give the impression that he would like to remain with Minnesota for the 2026 campaign.
Sticking around and learning from the sideline this season might be what benefits McCarthy the most in the long run when it comes to the future of his NFL career. Plus, there's a solid chance he will be called upon to start for the Vikings at least once in 2026 since Murray has missed multiple games in almost every season in his pro career.
At 23-years-old, McCarthy still potentially has a long tenure in the NFL in front of him. But how he approaches the next few months will likely have a major impact on determining how long that tenure is able to last.
