Previous McCarthy trade speculation now has a plausible destination, though NFL Network’s Dart injury report doesn't establish talks between the teams.
Minnesota’s quarterback picture has cleared up for Sunday. Kyler Murray has passed concussion protocol and will start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Carson Wentz stepped in when Murray was hurt in Week 1 and started the win at Chicago. McCarthy, 23, is behind both veterans.
I’d listen if the Giants called. But I’d also resist treating Dart’s injury as a reason for Minnesota to trade a young quarterback at the first offer. New York needs someone to play now; McCarthy hasn't proven he can do that reliably.

Jameis Winston is already in New York. He went 11-for-27 for 111 yards and an interception after Dart exited against the Los Angeles Rams, and Jake Haener is on the Giants’ practice squad. Winston’s rough relief outing definitely gives New York reason to be nervous, but he also didn't have the luxury of first-team reps.
One lousy game from the former No. 1 overall pick doesn’t make McCarthy an upgrade. McCarthy went 6-4 in 10 starts last season, yet Minnesota chose Murray to lead Kevin O’Connell’s offense, with Wentz backing him up.
Dart’s absence could make McCarthy appealing as more than a temporary replacement. He’s young enough to develop while pushing Winston, and a fresh start might help after his rocky run in Minnesota. The catch for New York is that Dart is the starter when healthy. If McCarthy plays well during Dart’s absence, the Giants could increase his trade value and move him to another team in 2027. Spending trade capital on another young passer for a temp gig is a tougher sell than adding veteran insurance.
Minnesota has a good reason to wait. Murray’s concussion ended his Vikings debut after 11 snaps, and Wentz had to carry the offense through two division wins. McCarthy’s move to QB3 makes him a trade candidate, but those first two games also showed how quickly a third quarterback can become relevant. If the Giants offer a worthwhile return, general manager Nolan Teasley should hear them out. Giving away that depth solely because Murray is back for Week 3 would be impatient.
New York’s next test comes Sunday against the Tennessee Titans with Winston expected to start. How he handles a full game and whether the Giants seek another quarterback afterward will tell us more about how desperate they are to make a move than Dart’s injury alone.
