Josh Dobbs turned a Vikings nightmare into must-watch football overnight

In just four starts and five total appearances with the team in the 2023 season, veteran quarterback Josh Dobbs provided Minnesota Vikings fans with more lasting memories than a good portion of all the signal-callers who have ever suited up in a purple and gold uniform.

Say what you will about how his arrival heavily impacted Minnesota's first-round pick slot in the 2024 NFL Draft, in 10 years, when Vikings fans look back on Dobbs' short stint with the team, many will likely say the same three words: "That was fun."

Given the franchise's history with random quarterbacks excelling after joining the team, it took no time at all for Minnesota fans to fully embrace Dobbs and all of the Dobbs-sanity he created during his time on the field in 2023.

How it happened

After Kirk Cousins suffered a brutal season-ending torn Achilles injury in the middle of a Week 8 win over the Green Bay Packers, many felt it was the perfect excuse for the Vikings to unload multiple players and do whatever seemed necessary to land a top pick in a quarterback-rich 2024 NFL Draft.

That's not what happened, though.

With a 4-4 record after their first eight games, Minnesota and head coach Kevin O'Connell still wanted to compete for a playoff spot. So, what did they do? They decided to send a 2024 sixth-round pick to the Arizona Cardinals to acquire Dobbs in a deal made on the day of the 2023 trade deadline.

How it went

A few days after he was acquired by the Vikings, Dobbs wasn't expected to do much more than observe from the sideline in the team's Week 9 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.

But those plans quickly changed when rookie Jaren Hall, who started under center for Minnesota against the Falcons, suffered a concussion in the opening quarter of the contest.

With Hall injured, the Vikings had no other choice than to play Dobbs, who was literally just handed the team's offensive playbook less than a week before the game.

What happened during the rest of the matchup is something Minnesota fans might never witness again.

Since Dobbs was still very unfamiliar with the offense, O'Connell basically did as much as he could to communicate on the headset on every single play (Ratatouille-style) to make sure the veteran quarterback got the ball where it was supposed to go.

Dobbs was doing as much as he could, but midway through the third quarter, the Vikings were trailing Atlanta by a score of 21-13, and it felt like a lead that was potentially too large to overcome with a quarterback who was basically running around like a chicken with his head cut off.

No one apparently told Dobbs this, however, as he and O'Connell found ways to help Minnesota's offense score a total of 17 points on their final four drives of the game, including one that ended with an 18-yard touchdown run by Dobbs, and another that saw the quarterback find Brandon Powell in the end zone for the game-clinching score with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter.

Somehow, someway, the Vikings pulled off an improbable win in a contest that most teams around the NFL probably wouldn't have been able to even keep the game competitive, let alone walk off the field with a victory.

That performance in Atlanta earned Dobbs an NFC Offensive Player of the Week honor, and he followed it up in Week 10 with another memorable showing, this time in front of Minnesota's home crowd inside U.S. Bank Stadium against the New Orleans Saints.

In just his second appearance with the Vikings after being with the team for less than two weeks, Dobbs led the team's offense to points on five of their first six drives against the Saints, and just like that, Minnesota had a 27-3 lead in the middle of the third quarter.

The Vikings went on to beat New Orleans by a final score of 27-19, and after winning both games with Dobbs taking the majority of the snaps at quarterback to improve their record to 6-4, Minnesota and its fans had their eyes set on making a push toward the playoffs.

Unfortunately, the bubble that was known as Dobbs-sanity eventually burst, as the Vikings went 1-2 in their next three games, and the quarterback's numbers plummeted to a level so low that he was benched in the fourth quarter of Minnesota's brutal 3-0 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 14 after completing just 43 percent of his passes for only 63 yards.

After that benching, Dobbs didn't start another game for the Vikings for the remainder of the 2023 season.

How it ended

Even after benching Dobbs, Minnesota couldn't find a way to win enough games to earn a spot in the playoffs. So, looking back on the 2023 campaign as a whole, Dobbs arguably provided Vikings fans with the most exciting moments from the entire season.

Following the conclusion of the 2023 season, Dobbs became a free agent, and Minnesota did not attempt to bring him back.

Instead, he landed a contract with the San Francisco 49ers to take over as their backup quarterback behind Brock Purdy after Sam Darnold left to sign with... the Vikings.
