True competition or not, Justin Jefferson is definitely among those interested in the outcome of the Minnesota Vikings QB1 battle this offseason between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy.
Jefferson appeared on "The Paul Allen Show" on KFXN-FM radio on Monday, and he shared some thoughts on both Murray and McCarthy.
It's very clear that he's excited to work more with the former No. 1 draft pick the Vikings signed earlier this year.
"He understands the game. He understands the defenses. He understands just how to put touch on the ball, just enough to where it gets to where it gotta go without making it difficult for us.
So he understands the game a lot more just because he's been in the game for a couple years now. So he kind of throws the ball before you even get out that break.
...He's a smart guy, and he's a competitor just like me.”
And then, Jefferson added just a small bit about McCarthy.
"I'm looking forward to J.J., seeing his improvements, and seeing the different things that he has picked up over the offseason. I'm excited for the competition.”
Justin Jefferson's feelings on the Minnesota Vikings QB "competition" are clear
Jefferson would probably dispute this, but it's not hard to tell which quarterback he's looking forward to catching passes from next season, and that is very clearly Mr. Murray.
A lot of what the Minnesota receiver said about Murray felt like he was also commenting on how he can actually do things that McCarthy couldn't last season. Things like putting touch on the ball, not putting his receivers in difficult situations, and understanding opposing defenses.
Then, when talking about McCarthy, Jefferson was basically like, "We'll see if he's gotten any better than last year." Those comments aren't exactly packed full of enthusiasm.
The Vikings' No. 1 receiver also added that he's "excited about the competition" when talking about both quarterbacks.
He's excited about the competition?
Yeah, because that's what every receiver really looks forward to heading into training camp each summer, catching passes from multiple quarterbacks.
Jefferson has been taught well by Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell over the years, so the receiver is usually going to say all the right things and avoid ruffling any feathers.
But as excited as he claims to be about Minnesota's quarterback "competition" this offseason, it's not hard at all to figure out who he would like to enter Week 1 as the team's starting signal-caller.
