There most likely was not a single resident of Minneapolis who was not smiling from ear to ear when the Minnesota Vikings signed quarterback Kyler Murray to a one-year deal.

The drama and headache that came with J.J. McCarthy starting at quarterback in 2025 seemed to have washed away with Murray's arrival, which has now given the Vikings hope for the new season.

On Monday, wide receiver Justin Jefferson spoke with the media for the first time since Murray's signing, joining Vikings fans with a grin and excited to have Murray in the building.

“My first reaction was just, it’s really good to get some good talent in the room, to give a little spark in the room to see a competitive edge from those guys to really lock in and do what we expect them to do, which is to come in and to be that guy.

We need that one guy for this team, so I'm definitely excited for that room. Excited to see what those guys have in store for us in training camp."

Jefferson also added how he's looking forward to teaming up with Murray to create some exciting plays out on the field.

"I’m definitely looking for those big, exciting plays. Definitely looking forward to his speed, quickness, his arm strength that he’s shown countless times over the years."

Despite ending the season with a win in his last four starts, McCarthy really worried a lot of Vikings fans in his first full year as the starter, as he struggled mightily. Injuries and inconsistent play hurt his performance on the field, leading the Vikings to bring in Murray to compete.

There's a different energy to the room with Murray there, as he has seven years of experience as the starter for the Arizona Cardinals. He was a two-time Pro Bowler with Arizona in 2020 and 2021 and was the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019. Murray has also led the Cardinals to the playoffs once.

A lot of people in the NFL have been disappointed in Murray as a former number-one overall pick, but to be fair, he played on many bad Cardinals teams. It doesn't help that injuries have prevented him from playing more than at least eight games in a season twice in the last three years.

Murray is a proven veteran who has won games and played well. He's a dynamic playmaker who can use his legs to pick up yards, a rare trait that Vikings fans have not seen in a quarterback for a long time.

Jefferson did acknowledge in the presser that he has been working out with McCarthy, which shows that the veteran wide receiver still believes in his young quarterback. One thing that Jefferson was right about, though, is that Murray was needed to push that QB room in ways that they needed to be.

Most Vikings fans believe that the quarterback job is Murray's to lose, but some new motivation might be what McCarthy needed to revive his quickly fading NFL career.
