There is a lot to love about Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell. Since joining the team in 2022, his 43-25 record has earned him quite a few accolades, including the 2024 AP NFL Coach of the Year award.

When looking at past Coach of the Year winners, a scary trend is obvious. Far too many of the celebrated head coaches didn't last too long after winning the award, and it is possible that O'Connell's future could be tied to the Vikings' quarterback play during the 2026 NFL season.

What does that mean for Kevin O'Connell this season? Even though the purple and gold don't have a general manager in place at the moment, that doesn't ensure that he and the new GM will be on the same page once a hire is made.

Fans have to wonder if Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell is on the hot seat during the 2026 NFL season.

Recently, FanSided's Nick Villano published an article that ranked all 32 head coaches in the NFL based on how hot their seats are heading into the 2026 NFL season. The placement of Minnesota Vikings' coach Kevin O'Connell is quite interesting.

Villano has O'Connell at No. 11 with this to say about his current situation:

"They went with McCarthy, and it led them to missing the playoffs. If O’Connell makes the wrong decision this season and they waste another year of Justin Jefferson’s prime, it could cost KOC his job. "

The Vikings front office had a big challenge this offseason. They needed to upgrade or get cheaper at numerous positions on the roster while attempting to escape one of the most complicated salary cap situations in the league.

While the salary cap isn't an issue that Kevin O'Connell is responsible for, it does have a major impact on the talent that Minnesota has available on its roster. It is then the head coach's task to evaluate that talent and create strategies for how to win football games.

For the Minnesota Vikings, a lot will hinge on how much Kevin O'Connell can get out of his roster. The conversation will primarily center around the quarterback position with Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy, but it will take a roster full of talented players, as well as a great strategy every week, for the purple and gold to be competitive in a massively challenging NFC North division this season.
