The long-awaited decision has finally come: the Minnesota Vikings are rolling with Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback.
After two weeks of training camp, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell picks the man every fan thought he would in the first place. Murray signed a one-year contract, with many suspecting he was brought in to beat out J.J. McCarthy for the starting job.
Now that the drama is over, the question is: how did O'Connell come to that decision? Was it as clear-cut as Vikings fans thought?

About two hours after ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter broke the news, O'Connell faced the media to address the situation. It started with over eight minutes of the Vikings head coach breaking down the process. He shared how Murray won the starting job and what he saw in his game that helped him become the man.
"I think he's demonstrated what he's capable of, you know, both the experience he has playing at a high level in this league, but also his experience now of coming in here, being challenged.
I think he's shown enough to really project with the right prerequisite now of work for our starter leading into a camp that we can get the rhythm, the timing, we can get the mastery of our system and this year's system, regardless of what we've done in previous years, what we're going to look like, how we're going to play.
You know, there's different things and nuances that, you know, we're going to fit to what our players, Kyler included, do the best.
In my opinion, he's got the skill set and the abilities, you know, not only just from a standpoint of accuracy, but his ability to affect the game with his athleticism."
For O'Connell, the original plan was for the Vikings to decide around the ninth or 10th practice who would start at quarterback. He wants Murray to now focus on building rapport with the starting receivers for the rest of training camp.
Murray has been an accomplished starter in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals for the seven years he was there, after being their No. 1 overall pick. He made two Pro Bowls and won Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019.
In three of the last four years, Murray has missed 27 games due to two serious injuries. Last season, he missed 12 games, resulting in Arizona eating his contract and letting him go during the offseason.
Training camp with the Vikings has not been smooth for Murray, as he has struggled at times. Ultimately, his athleticism in making plays with his legs helped separate him from McCarthy.

The McCarthy story appears to have a sad ending, with him only starting 10 games in his career before already losing his job. Despite losing his job, O'Connell still believes in McCarthy as an NFL quarterback.
"In no way does this diminish anything that J.J.'s demonstrated. There's been real, real strong, solid evidence of growth.
Some of the things we really pinpointed for him in the offseasons, he's shown just a tireless commitment to doing those things, and it's shown out— it's shown up out here on the grass.
And even more so than that, he's embraced it, the challenge of it, you know, with the right mindset every day that I think will have great benefit on him moving forward, this daily improvement mindset."
O'Connell did say that McCarthy will be the backup quarterback for the Vikings. The speculation about the young quarterback being traded will most likely start up.
McCarthy went 6-4 as the starting quarterback of the Vikings. He completed 57.6% of his passes for 1,632 yards and 11 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. McCarthy added 181 rushing yards and four touchdowns in 10 games.
Those stats don't tell the whole story of how last season went. The first half of the year went badly, with a 55.7 percent completion rate for 929 yards and six touchdowns to 10 interceptions in six games. His last four games were impressive, completing 64.3 percent of his passes for 703 yards and five touchdowns to two interceptions.
Whether it was former general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah's fault for taking a chance on him or O'Connell's fault for not developing him, the Vikings are moving on from McCarthy. After showing promise in the last month of the 2025 season, Murray has been handed the keys to the kingdom, and McCarthy is reduced to being his backup.
It now all comes down to what the Vikings do with McCarthy and whether Murray can elevate this franchise back to their winning ways. There's no question now that the pressure is on O'Connell and Murray to produce quickly in Minnesota.
