Caleb Banks wasn't the consensus first-round pick for the Minnesota Vikings in this year's NFL Draft during the offseason, but he clearly was for the actual team when they selected him on Thursday.

Following the selection, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell explained why the team added the former Florida defensive lineman with its 2026 first-round pick.

"Really excited about adding a player of Caleb's talent. Really felt like we were able to identify a
player with the ceiling [that] we believe to be a top 10 caliber talent and difference maker, potentially in a place where we really wanted to add some size and youth to that defensive line.

...Quite honestly, as coaches, can't wait to coach this player.

He loves football, wants to be coached hard and ultimately believes that the Minnesota Vikings is a great place for him to come and try to maximize who he is as a player, not only now, but where we think he can take this thing throughout his career with the type of talent and ability that he has."

Kevin O'Connell quiets concerns about new Minnesota Vikings DL Caleb Banks

Due to a foot injury, Banks only appeared in two games in his final season at Florida. Then, during the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine earlier this year, he suffered another foot injury.

Despite the concerns, ESPN's Pete Thamel shared on Wednesday that Banks is "on pace to be fully cleared for full football activities in early June," according to a letter that was sent to multiple teams around the league.

O'Connell also did his best on Thursday to quiet any worries that Vikings fans might have about the durability of their newest defensive lineman.

"Medically, we feel strongly about where Caleb's not only at right now after really getting that thing totally fixed up, and having the type of medical team here [that we do].

Orthopedic surgeon-wise, we have some of the best in the world. A lot of people around the league come to some of our folks specifically in regards to foot and ankle stuff.

We spent a lot of time, lengthy time, just making sure we all felt really good about it so that Caleb can come here with the excitement that we have for him."

It's perfectly understandable for Minnesota fans to have some concerns about Banks, given his recent injury history.

But the Vikings clearly believe that they have the resources necessary to not only help him recover from his current injury, but help lead him down a path to reach the top-10 potential that the franchise thinks he possesses.
