Currently, former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins is still a member of the Atlanta Falcons. In the recent past, Cousins has been mentioned as a fallback option for the Pittsburgh Steelers if they don't sign Aaron Rodgers this year, and that still seems to be the case.
On a recent episode of his podcast, ESPN's Adam Schefter shared an update about Cousins' future and how it basically depends on what Rodgers decides to do.
"We're taping this Tuesday morning, June 3rd. A week from now, as we mentioned, the Pittsburgh Steelers open their mandatory mini-camp. We're waiting any day now, we would think, for a word, a decision, from Aaron Rodgers about whether or not and when he will sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Now, the Steelers have said all along, they believe he's gonna sign there. We've heard their owner, Art Rooney, come out and say basically he expects Aaron Rodgers to sign with Pittsburgh, and with the Steelers having their mandatory mini-camp next week, that would figure to be the time.
But here's where it gets interesting, and again, we could get the Rodgers decision later today, nullifying these comments.
But if he drags his feet more, if he doesn't show up for that mandatory mini-camp, and if you are the Pittsburgh Steelers, don't you, at that point in time, have to have a conversation about whether you should explore trading for Kirk Cousins and lobbying a call into the Atlanta Falcons to make a move?"
Minnesota Vikings nemesis Aaron Rodgers holds the future of Kirk Cousins in his hands
As Schefter pointed out, the Steelers are scheduled to hold their mandatory mini-camp next week, and if Rodgers is going to join them, that would seem like the ideal time to do so.
If he does end up signing with Pittsburgh next week, then Cousins is likely stuck as a backup with the Falcons for the 2025 season. But if Rodgers opts to remain unsigned when Steelers mini-camp gets underway, then the former Vikings quarterback might have a legitimate path out of Atlanta before the start of the 2025 campaign.
In the past, Cousins has shared his admiration for Rodgers and what he has been able to accomplish in his NFL career. But if the multi-time MVP quarterback ends up making a decision that keeps Cousins with the Falcons for next season, that admiration likely won't be as high as it used to be.
