After they hosted him for a visit earlier in the day, the Minnesota Vikings and veteran edge rusher Kyle Van Noy reportedly agreed to a contract on Tuesday evening, according to The Ringer's Tom Pelissero.
Minnesota became in desperate need of adding some additional depth to its edge rusher room after Tyler Batty suffered a torn ACL last week. With the addition of Van Noy, the Vikings have not only improved the depth of the position group, but they've also added someone who has started 115 games in his NFL career and been a part of two Super Bowl-winning teams.
How Kyle Van Noy will impact the Minnesota Vikings in 2026
When sharing the news about the reported signing on Tuesday, Pelissero also mentioned that Van Noy will begin his tenure with Minnesota on the team's practice squad to help give him any time he needs to adjust to the Vikings' defensive scheme.
That amount of time shouldn't be long, as Van Noy has worked with current Minnesota defensive coordinator Brian Flores multiple times in the past when both were members of the New England Patriots (2016 to 2018) and Miami Dolphins (2020).
Ideally, the Vikings would probably like to have Van Noy available for the regular-season opener against the Green Bay Packers on September 13. Minnesota won't need Van Noy to be a starter for that matchup, so it would be pretty surprising if he's unable to take the field by then.
Once he becomes a permanent member of the Vikings' active roster (assuming all goes well), he will likely be placed in the No. 3 spot on the team's edge rusher depth chart behind Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner, but ahead of Bo Richter and Chaz Chambliss.
Given his extensive starting experience, Van Noy should be able to easily fill in for Turner or Van Ginkel if needed this season. But for the most part, expect Van Noy to be more of a situational pass rusher for Minnesota in 2026.
Whenever he's able to eventually get on the field, the Vikings will be hoping to get the version of Van Noy that excelled with Baltimore in 2023 and 2024, instead of the one that saw a dip in production last season.
During Van Noy's first two years with the Ravens in 2023 and 2024, he generated a combined 109 pressures (54.5 per season) and 23 sacks (11.5 per season), according to data from PFF. But then, in 2025 with Baltimore, he was only able to generate 27 pressures and two sacks.
Hopefully, Van Noy's performance last season wasn't a sign of things to come, because, at his best, he could emerge as a really valuable piece of Minnesota's defense in 2026, not only on the field, but in the locker room as well.
In addition to rotating in and helping give Turner and Van Ginkel a few breathers per game when needed, Van Noy can also help with the continued development of Turner.
This upcoming season will be Turner's first as a starter, so Van Noy and his more than 100 games of starting experience should be able to help the hungry 23-year-old figure out how to pace himself throughout the year to avoid any sort of burnout near the end of the schedule.
Overall, it's a really smart signing by new Vikings general manager Nolan Teasley, and one that could have a really positive impact on someone like Turner for the remainder of his NFL career.
