For the first time since he signed with the franchise back in March, we got to hear from new Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray on Wednesday.
Murray was served a bunch of questions from the local Twin Cities media after the Vikings' OTA practice, and it didn't take long at all before someone asked him about how his relationship has been with fellow Minnesota quarterback J.J. McCarthy so far.
The Vikings' newest signal-caller proceeded to give an answer that sounded like it was straight out of the Kevin O'Connell version of "Quarterbacking 101."
"It's been great. I know he's a younger guy. So, any way I can help him. Obviously, I've played seven years now, going on eight, so I'm considered a veteran, even though I don't see myself as that.
Give him any knowledge that he needs. Again, we're both competitors, and I know we both want what's best for the team."
Minnesota Vikings QB Kyler Murray happy to pass along any knowledge to J.J. McCarthy
Murray has obviously been in the NFL much longer than McCarthy, and he knows what it's like to play at a very high level. So, it definitely says a ton about Murray's character that he's still willing to help out the third-year Minnesota quarterback despite the fact that both are supposedly in a competition to be the team's starter for next season.
As far as how legit that competition actually is, that's something that remains to be seen.
Don't expect the Vikings to reveal much of anything when it comes to their feelings on Murray and McCarthy during the team's OTA sessions over the next few weeks. Minnesota also has no reason to reveal anything before they return for training camp in the summer.
These next few weeks are about getting Murray to feel a little more comfortable in O'Connell's offense and with the skill players that he'll be throwing to.
McCarthy will likely get some opportunities to work with the Vikings' first-team offense, but he's unlikely to gain or lose any ground based on how he plays against a defense full of guys in t-shirts and shorts.
Murray's first impression was a good one on Wednesday, and Minnesota is hoping that impression continues throughout the entire 2026 season.
