It was an outcome that many had anticipated all the way back in March when Kyler Murray signed with the Minnesota Vikings, but on Tuesday, the team made it official and revealed that the former No. 1 overall draft pick will open up the 2026 regular season as their starting quarterback.
With the decision, Murray will now be the fourth different quarterback to enter Week 1 as Minnesota's starter in the last four years, joining J.J. McCarthy, Sam Darnold, and Kirk Cousins.
Shortly after Tuesday's training camp practice, Murray shared his reaction to winning the battle against McCarthy to be the Vikings' No. 1 quarterback.
"The whole process was great. Full transparency from KO to me, to J.J., to everybody in the room.
You know, the competition, it was what it was, and [it was] everything I expected it to be.
I didn't expect to be handed the job or anything like that. I expected to come here and compete, and I'm very appreciative of how it was handled."

Although it was a decision that many Vikings fans expected, not everyone in the fanbase was pleased with Minnesota picking Murray over McCarthy on Tuesday.
Luckily for Murray, he might be able to win over the hearts of those less-than-thrilled fans rather quickly, as his first two games as the Vikings' starting quarterback will be against the Green Bay Packers in Week 1 and the Chicago Bears in Week 2.
Leading Minnesota to a pair of wins in two matchups against hated rivals to begin the 2026 campaign would be a very easy way for Murray to get any doubters within the Vikings' fanbase on his side.
Week 1's showdown against the Packers will be full of storylines, as it will not only be Murray's regular-season debut with Minnesota, but the veteran quarterback will be going up against a Green Bay defense that is now run by Jonathan Gannon, who was Murray's head coach with the Arizona Cardinals from 2023 to 2025.
Gannon will definitely be looking to prove to the Packers that he knows exactly how to stop Murray, while the former Cardinals signal-caller will be attempting to make sure that doesn't happen.
The stage is certainly set for an explosive regular-season opener for the Vikings on their home field inside U.S. Bank Stadium. Will Murray give Minnesota fans what they want, or will his debut for the franchise generate moments that the fanbase would rather forget about?
