During a play in their first joint practice session with the New England Patriots earlier this week, Minnesota Vikings rookie offensive lineman Donovan Jackson made himself known to the opposing defense and the fans in attendance.
The play saw Vikings running back Aaron Jones catch a screen pass, and after that, Jackson helped lead the way by sprinting downfield and pushing Patriots defenders to the ground as they came at him.
The rookie guard's level of intensity on that play caught the eyes of fans, coaches, and players. So much so that Minnesota quarterback J.J. McCarthy had quite the praise for Jackson later in the day. However, as a Michigan alum, McCarthy also made sure to stir the pot of the bitter rivalry between the Wolverines and Jackson's former college, Ohio State.
"I absolutely [loved] it. Us Michigan guys, we get a little skeptical of the mentality and the tough guy-ness of Ohio State, but he absolutely proved it. It was a sight to see, and I just love how fired up he got after that, too. He's gonna be a great player."
Donovan Jackson could be a favorite of J.J. McCarthy and Minnesota Vikings fans for a long time
It has been quite a time for the Vikings to find the right offensive line combination for many, many years now. After the playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams last season, it was clear that the offensive line combination Minnesota had at the time was not getting it done.
The Vikings needed an upgrade from the likes of center Garrett Bradbury and left guard Blake Brandel, among others. So with the 24th overall pick of the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Minnesota selected Jackson.
Early signs point to the former Ohio State offensive lineman being a great addition for the Vikings as he continues to prepare for his rookie season. Based on how well Jackson has performed in Minnesota's training camp this summer, McCarthy should be well protected in 2025.
