On Monday, the Minnesota Vikings announced that the 2025 season has come to a close for quarterback Carson Wentz, as he is set to undergo surgery on his shoulder that will keep him sidelined for the rest of the campaign.
With Wentz now unavailable for the rest of 2025, the Vikings' current quarterback room consists of a 22-year-old J.J. McCarthy and undrafted rookie Max Brosmer. Some additional signal-caller experience would seem to be a need for Minnesota after Monday's news.
But with the 2025 season almost halfway complete, it's not like there are currently a ton of quarterback options for the Vikings to choose from. However, there is a familiar face who could potentially fill the experience void created by Wentz's season-ending injury.
Minnesota Vikings should attempt to trade for Chicago Bears QB Case Keenum
Currently, the Chicago Bears have three quarterbacks on their active roster: Caleb Williams, Tyson Bagent, and Case Keenum. Yes, that Case Keenum, the guy who helped lead Minnesota to the NFC Championship in 2017 and threw the pass in the iconic "Minneapolis Miracle" play in the 2017 Playoffs.
Last April, Keenum signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Bears after spending the previous two seasons as the top backup for the Houston Texans behind C.J. Stroud. Back in August, Chicago also signed Bagent to a two-year extension worth $10 million, so he's clearly someone they want to keep around.
With the Bears being set at QB1 with Williams and QB2 with Bagent, perhaps they would be willing to move Keenum before next week's trade deadline. Given Keenum's age (37) and his salary, it likely wouldn't require Minnesota to give up more than a late-round draft pick in 2026 or 2027 to acquire the veteran signal-caller.
Adding someone like Keenum to the quarterback room would also be a move that shows the Vikings are committed to helping McCarthy as much as possible. No one would think that Minnesota would trade for Keenum to come in and compete with McCarthy for the starting job.
But the veteran passer has been in the NFL since 2012, and he's spent the last handful of years helping with the development of some of the league's most notable quarterbacks like Williams, Stroud, Baker Mayfield, and Josh Allen. He still has value to add to a team, even if his on-field abilities aren't anywhere close to where they were when he was last in purple.
Keenum created a ton of fun memories during his previous stint with the Vikings, and if the team were to acquire him before next week's trade deadline, there's a chance that he could help McCarthy become the next quarterback to create iconic moments for the franchise.
