Much has been said about how the Minnesota Vikings are performing on the field but not enough credit has been passed on to the amazing coaching staff that has helped to lead the team to a 14-2 record with one game remaining on the schedule.
The Vikings' positional coaches and assistants have done a fantastic job preparing the players each week. One coach who has received a lot of attention recently is quarterbacks coach Josh McCown, who could get an opportunity to coach for another franchise in 2025.
Vikings coach could be on the radar of last-place AFC team in 2025
While the Minnesota Vikings are likely hoping to retain as much of their coaching staff as possible after this season, it would be difficult for a standout coach to not be interested in moving up the ladder, even if it means doing it for another team.
Recently, The Athletic’s Chad Graff wrote an article about coaching options for the New England Patriots if they decide to keep head coach Jerod Mayo. One idea involved going after McCown as an option to be their new offensive coordinator.
"Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks coach Josh McCown — who has been one of the best position coaches in the NFL this season, helping Sam Darnold lead Minnesota to an incredible year — helped coach and mentor Maye in high school. Many coordinator candidates might be scared off by a coach seemingly being on shaky ground, but perhaps Mayo could lean into selling Maye to McCown given their relationship."Chad Graff - The Athletic
There is a history between Josh McCown and young quarterback Drake Maye that could be a selling point for getting Minnesota's quarterbacks' coach to ship out to Boston. However, it would also be hugely tempting to stay with the Vikings and run it back with the season's success
Not only that, but the Minnesota Vikings would likely do whatever they could to keep McCown with the franchise as they continue to have J.J. McCarthy grow and develop as a quarterback. Making a change at quarterbacks coach could be a bit jarring for the young quarterback's progress.
Several coaches and coordinators for the Minnesota Vikings could get calls for interviews for coaching openings in the offseason. It wouldn't be shocking if Josh McCown is among those purple and gold staff members whose phones ring with opportunities.
