Vikings could have a major Justin Jefferson problem after Week 13
By Adam Patrick
With his team having a 9-2 record heading into a Week 13 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, most assumed Minnesota Vikings star wide receiver Justin Jefferson was just going to be his normal, jovial self during his weekly session with the local media on Wednesday.
However, Jefferson was not smiling and laughing throughout this week's media session as he typically does. Instead, his demeanor was much more monotone, and some of his answers were short and full of shoulder shrugs.
After finishing Minnesota's Week 12 win over the Chicago Bears with only two catches for 27 yards, it's fair to wonder if he's still frustrated with his production in that contest, especially after hearing the answer that he gave to the final question asked during his media session on Wednesday.
Minnesota Vikings need to get Justin Jefferson the ball in Week 13 vs. the Arizona Cardinals
Before Jefferson's media session came to a close this week, he was asked a question about whether or not the Vikings could do anything differently to combat how defenses are covering him each week.
Minnesota's No. 1 receiver kept it real simple with his answer.
"That's a great question. I'm not really sure.
...I don't [have any idea]."
Sure, Jefferson's demeanor on Wednesday could be totally unrelated to his performance in Chicago, and it could be due to something completely different. But if he is still feeling frustrated about Week 12, then this is something Minnesota needs to fix before it boils over and becomes a much bigger problem.
Don't be surprised if Jefferson gets fed the ball early and often on Sunday when the Vikings take on Arizona. He's the best wide receiver in the NFL and he knows that, so Minnesota needs to make sure they're still using him in their offense as much as they can.
Yes, it's great when other Vikings players are able to advantage of all the attention that an opposing defense gives to Jefferson. But it's not like Minnesota is some sort of bad team when Jefferson puts together an impressive performance either.
During his NFL career, he's had 32 games with at least 100 receiving yards. In those 32 matchups, the Vikings have a 20-12 record.
Jefferson drawing double and triple coverage in games also isn't something new. He's been seeing this from opposing defenses during almost his entire tenure in the league, and he's still been able to accumulate more receiving yards in his first five seasons than any other player in NFL history.
So, Minnesota needs just to do everyone a favor when they face the Cardinals on Sunday and make sure Jefferson has the football in his hands much more frequently than he did last week against the Bears. Because if they don't, his frustrations are only going to grow, and the Vikings will potentially have to deal with a big unnecessary problem.
