Last season was tough for the Minnesota Vikings. Their inconsistent and inefficient offense put a lot of pressure on the defense to keep the team in games, but the purple and gold somehow managed to finish the year with a winning record.
With the 2026 season approaching, it will be interesting to see if the Vikings can correct the multiple problems on offense from last season and be a serious contender for the NFC North crown and a playoff spot.
With so much talent on the roster, it will come down to the coaches to implement a strategy that gets the most out of the players. Much of that responsibility will fall on offensive coordinator Wes Phillips and defensive coordinator Brian Flores.
In a recent ranking of NFL offensive and defensive coordinator duos for the upcoming 2026 NFL season, Brian Flores leads the way for the Minnesota Vikings.
Since joining the Minnesota Vikings, Brian Flores has been doing great things with the defense. In fact, the team's unit ranked third in the league last year while Phillips' offense earned the No. 28 rank for their play.
On the Sports Illustrated website, Gilberto Manzano shared a ranking of the top five offensive and defensive coordinator duos in the NFL entering the 2026 season. Minnesota's coordinators landed in the No. 6 spot.
Here is what was said about Flores:
"Flores’s aggressive approach and creative ways of generating pressure have been imitated by several coaches throughout the league. What’s more impressive is that Flores, who joined the Vikings in 2023, has done this without having much star power on defense and on a team that has prioritized the offense."
By now, Vikings fans don't need to be told that Brian Flores is a good defensive coordinator. However, Wes Phillips will always be tied to the offense with head coach Kevin O'Connell, and seeing that unit struggle last year was massively disappointing.
"Phillips and coach Kevin O’Connell need a bounce-back season, but there’s no question that they’ve been innovative since overseeing the Vikings’ operation."
Even a decent season at quarterback, paired with better injury luck. would be a huge boost to the Vikings' offense. It seems unlikely that they will repeat with a ranking that low in 2026, but it's hard to know when disaster will strike and the coaching staff will be left scrambling for answers once again.
One thing for certain is that Brian Flores is definitely doing the heavy lifting when it comes to these coordinator duo rankings. The respect he has earned and continues to earn with his aggressive schemes is impressive, and hopefully, he can continue to have great results with the purple and gold.
