A few weeks ago, the Minnesota Vikings kicked off their 2026 season by earning two wins in a row over NFC North opponents when they handed losses to both the Green Bay Packers in Week 1 and the Chicago Bears in Week 2.

On Sunday, the Vikings will attempt to improve their division record to 3-0 this year when they travel to Ford Field to take on the rival Detroit Lions. Oh yeah, and Minnesota will also be attempting to remain unbeaten this season and walk off the field with a 7-0 record for the first time since 2000.

Leading up to Sunday's battle in Detroit, we'll have all the latest injury updates for both teams (including inactives right after they're shared before kickoff), predictions from multiple experts, what storylines to keep track of, and much more right here.

Biggest Vikings Storylines heading into Week 8

Can Minnesota slow down Jahmyr Gibbs?

Heading into Week 8, Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs is averaging an astounding 103.3 rushing yards per game this season. If Gibbs keeps up his pace, he'll easily eclipse his single-season career-high of 1,412 rushing yards he had back in 2024.

So far this year, the Vikings defense has been outstanding, but if the unit has had one weakness, it's been stopping the run.

Minnesota still ranks 10th in rushing yards allowed this year, but three of their six opponents in 2026 have rushed for over 120 yards, including the Indianapolis Colts, who racked up 154 yards on the ground last week, led by Jonathan Taylor.

If Minnesota is going to get a win this weekend, they'll likely need to prevent Gibbs and the Lions from becoming their fourth opponent of 2026 to finish a game with at least 120 rushing yards.

T.J. Hockenson could be in for a big game

No team in the NFL has struggled against opposing tight ends more than Detroit this season. Against the Lions this year, tight ends have already hauled in nine touchdowns, and five of them have finished their matchup against Detroit with at least 50 receiving yards.

So one has to imagine that Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson is pretty excited to go up against the Lions this weekend.

Hockenson has emerged as one of the favorite targets of Minnesota quarterback Kyler Murray this season, and in Detroit on Sunday, that's something that everyone should expect to continue.

Will Minnesota be the first team to pick off Jared Goff?

Lions quarterback Jared Goff has been on fire this season, averaging almost 300 passing yards per game while throwing 14 touchdowns and not a single interception. But the last time he faced a Vikings defense led by Brian Flores, he threw a pair of picks to the wrong team.

Goff's last two games in his career with multiple interceptions have actually both come in matchups against Minnesota. So, Flores and the Vikings definitely know how to fluster the Detroit quarterback and make him make poor decisions with the football.

Sunday's divisional contest will likely be a close one, so the turnover battle will probably play a huge factor in determining the result. If Minnesota can force Goff to throw his first interception of the year, it could potentially be the type of play that helps the Vikings remain undefeated this season.
