Vikings' dream draft could explode into reality if chaos breaks right

With the 2026 NFL Draft finally upon us on Thursday, we'll finally know who the Minnesota Vikings take in the first round. Of course, most of the mock drafters have been pointing to one player clearly over every other lately, though a prominent Vikings beat writer has gone against that grain.

The Vikings are in a position, with a need for an influx of young talent across the roster, where they don't have to draft based on needs.

Sure, there are some spots they're likely to address (safety, running back, defensive tackle, tight end), but their first-round pick (No. 18 overall) could go a lot of different directions based on what happens before them.

Of course, that assumes Minnesota stays at No. 18 on Thursday. But for the purpose here, let's say they do and they pick from several suitable options.

Minnesota Vikings would sprint to call in the pick if Caleb Downs somehow fell to No. 18

The NFL likes to make a show of the draft, to the point they get upset with teams who don't use more of their allotted time (now eight minutes) in the first round. Not that teams should care at all about the league's desire to manufacture draft drama if they know who they want.

The Vikings probably have several players they'd be happy to take at No. 18 if they're available. But one player stands out as someone who, if he fell to them, would upend their evolving draft board as picks are made.

With Harrison Smith nearing retirement, one way or the other and perhaps very soon, the Vikings do need to address the safety position sometime in this draft. It has become too convenient for mock drafts to go that way, but if near-consensus mock pick Dillon Thieneman isn't available or the desired player, all would not be lost.

Ohio State safety Caleb Downs is seen by some as a top-10 pick, positional truthers be darned. But the Cincinnati Bengals trading the 10th overall pick to the New York Giants for defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence has opened things up for him to potentially fall, and along that line, FanSided's Jason La Canfora has Downs going 20th overall to the Dallas Cowboys in his final 2026 mock.

The draft is a zero-sum game. If someone is going to climb up the first round, like there have been some indications Thieneman could, someone has to fall. That someone, at the same position no less, could be Downs.

And if he's somehow there at No. 18, the call from the war room at TCO Performance Center to make Downs a Viking would be done so fast the league would hate it.
