Harrison Smith plans to play in the Minnesota Vikings’ season opener against the Green Bay Packers, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. The veteran safety’s availability will still depend on how his body responds during game-week preparations after he missed all of training camp.
Since the Vikings made the odd but largely procedural decision to release Smith in March, they had kept the door open for his return. On the holiday weekend, eight days out from the season opener against the Green Bay Packers, the veteran safety walked through that door and signed on for a 15th season.
Reports on the terms of Smith's one-year deal have varied a bit, but any way you slice it, it's a fairly significant investment for the Vikings.
Returning for the 2026 season has extra layers of meaning for Smith in Vikings' lore, which he's surely aware of. A 15th season will tie him for the fourth-most seasons played in a Vikings uniform. Playing four games would give him the third-most games played in Purple (211), behind only Jim Marshall (270) and Mick Tinglehoff (240).
Now the question is whether Smith can complete his accelerated ramp-up in time to follow through on his Week 1 plans.
Will Harrison Smith play vs. the Green Bay Packers in Week 1?
By all accounts, the 37-year-old has stayed in shape during his hiatus. Head coach Kevin O'Connell repeatedly acknowledged that the two sides remained in regular communication, and we know Smith takes his conditioning and recovery very seriously.
Of course, being in good overall shape is not the same as being in football shape -- wearing pads, absorbing contact and handling game-speed demands.
If anyone is worried about Harrison Smith being in shape let me remind you what his at-home recovery set up looks like.

A year ago around this time provides a broad, though imprecise, frame of reference for what a Smith ramp-up might look like. He missed most of the 2025 training camp due to what was later revealed to be a personal health issue. He then missed the first two games of the season as he continued to ramp up.
This time, there are no apparent health issues as Smith re-enters the building. And according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, he intends to be on the field against Green Bay.
"Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell and DC Brian Flores pushed hard for Harrison Smith’s return. This will be his second-highest-paid season at the age of 37. And he’s coming in with plans on playing next Sunday against the Packers."
Smith’s intentions offer Vikings fans their clearest answer yet, but the team’s medical and coaching staffs will have the final say after evaluating him throughout the week.
If Smith does play against the Packers, it's safe to assume he will be on some kind of snap count after missing training camp. Rushing him into a full workload and risking an injury that costs him additional time would defeat the purpose of bringing him back.
So the answer to the question of Smith playing in Week 1 is ... probably -- just probably not on an unrestricted snap count.
