Game Notes for Minnesota Vikings vs. Green Bay Packers in Week 1

1st Quarter Notes

  • Kyler Murray's first pass as the Vikings' starting QB couldn't have gone much worse, as a Packers' blitz forced him to heave the ball in the direction of Justin Jefferson, but it ended up getting picked off by Green Bay defender Keisean Nixon.
  • Thankfully, Minnesota's defense was able to prevent Green Bay's offense from doing much on offense after the turnover, as they held them to just 17 total yards on six plays.
  • Packers' rookie kicker Trey Smack put Green Bay on the board first with three points after a 59-yard field goal.
  • Minnesota's second drive ends with no points after back-to-back fasle start penalties forced them into a 3rd-and-17 situation that they were unable to convert for a first to down.
  • Green Bay responded on their second offensive drive with the contest's first touchdown after Jordan Love connected with receiver Christian Watson on an 81-yard catch-and-run. Smack missed the point-after, so both teams went to the sideline with the Packers leading 9-0.
  • Murray headed to the locker room to be evaluated for a concussion after suffering a brutal hit midway through Minnesota's third offensive drive of the game. Carson Wentz entered the contest in place of him.
  • Wentz came in was able to lead the Vikings to their first points of the matchup. A 38-yard field goal by Will Reichard cut Green Bay's lead to 9-3

2nd Quarter Notes

  • The Packers fired right back, and after a long 59-yard kick return by Green Bay's Bo Melton, they added more points with another Smack field goal to bring the score to 12-3.
  • Minnesota's two offensive drives after Smack's second field goal both resulted in zero points, including the second one which featured a controversial play with Aaron Jones having a run of over 50 yards called back after refs believed he was down by contact earlier than the original call.
  • Vikings get on the board with their first touchdown of the season with around two minutes left in the second quarter after Wentz launched a deep 39-yard pass right into the bread basket of Justin Jefferson. Extra point was good by Reichard and Green Bay's lead was cut to 12-10.
  • The Packers wasted no time responding to Minnesota's touchdown by putting together a seven-play, 74-yard drive in less than two minutes that ended with Love connecting with Watson again for a two-yard score in the end zone. The touchdown gave the Packers a 19-10 lead at the half.

3rd Quarter Notes

  • Both team's defenses held strong to open the second half as neither the Vikings or the Packers were able to score on their first drives of the third quarter.
  • Green Bay's second offensiv drive of the third quarter went much differently, as they drove 79 yards down the field in 12 plays. Minnesota was able to keep them out of the end zone, but another Smack field goal increased the Packers' lead to 22-10.
  • Following Green Bay's scoring drive, the Vikings got a spark from second-year wide receiver Myles Price after he returned a kickoff for an impressive 68-yard gain.
  • Minnesota's offense was then able to turn Price's return into a touchdown when Wentz connected with T.J. Hockenson over the middle for a 16-yard score, and Green Bay's lead was cut to 22-17.

4th Quarter Notes

  • The Packers' next drive carried into the fourth quarter and it led to a huge stop by the Vikings defense after Green Bay failed on a 4th-and-1 on Minnesota's 17-yard line. The stop gave the Vikings' offense the ball back early in the fourth quarter with a chance to take the lead down five.
  • After stopping the Packers, Minnesota's offense got the ball back, and thanks Green Bay committing three critical penalties on a trio of third downs, the Vikings drove all the way down the field and finished it with an Aaron Jones three-yard touchdown run.
  • Following the touchdown, Minnesota added more points with a two-point conversion from Wentz to Jefferson in the back of the end zone and the Vikings walked off the field with a 25-22 lead with less than seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
  • Minnesota's defense followed up their offense's big drive with a big drive of their own as Andrew Van Ginkel stripped Love and recovered the football on Green Bay's own one-yard line.
  • The Vikings wasted no time and immediately scored another touchdown on a Jordan Mason one-yard run to increase their lead to 32-22 with less than five minutes remaining in the game.
  • Minnesota's fourth-quarter momentum continued as Vikings cornerback James Pierre picked off a Love pass and returned it to the Packers' 14-yard line.
  • Minnesota's offense only needed three plays to turn Pierre's interception into another touchdown after Wentz connected with Jefferson for a nine-yard score and increase their lead to 39-22.

Green Bay's final attempt in the fourth quarter to decease Minnesota's lead came up short, and after a 22-point final quarter, the Vikings walked off the field with an impressive 39-22 win to begin the 2026 season with a 1-0 record.
