Vikings’ latest GM search update may have already spoiled the final decision

The timing of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah's firing put the Minnesota Vikings at a disadvantage in finding a new general manager. Under those circumstances, and as part of the clear attempt to pin all the blame for the mistakes of recent years on Adofo-Mensah, it made sense to promote long-time executive Rob Brzezinski to interim general manager.

Brzezinski has now led a run through free agency and the NFL Draft. As the calendar turned to May, the list of general manager candidates expanded in a surge of interview requests on the same day.

Any or all of those candidates have a right to decline the interview request, but the timeline for those interviews has not been reported.

According to The Athletic's Alec Lewis on Tuesday, Minnesota started its general manager interviews on Monday. The first round of interviews will be completed this week, as part of what Lewis expects to be a "methodical path to reach resolution."

Latest report about Minnesota Vikings' GM search points directly to inevitable end game

CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones added to Lewis' initial report on Tuesday regarding the Vikings interviewing general manager candidates, with some additional insight about the timeline for the process to be completed.

"Virtual interviews began yesterday and continue today. With league meetings next week followed by a holiday, it’s possible in-person second round interviews won’t take place until after Memorial Day"

Not that anyone should be surprised, based on how things have gone up to this point, but the Vikings might not complete their interview process for a new general manager until the last days of May. To say nothing of when a hire might be made.

How involved Brzezinski is in the hiring process for a permanent general manager is unclear. Is he at all a part of these initial virtual interviews? Will he be in the room for the in-person interviews when they happen?

A bigger question lingers. If he doesn't just have the interim tag removed from his general manager title, what will Brzezinski's role in the Vikings' front office be going forward?

It's safe to assume it won't be exactly the same as it was before he was made the interim GM, which might turn away some of the candidates on the list of interviewees.

As could've been expected, and for good reason, Lewis had Brzezinski atop his list of winners from the Vikings' offseason.

"Only time will allow for an accurate assessment of his effectiveness. At the very least, the Vikings proceeded through this period with a more realistic sense of alignment.

Now, he is perhaps the favorite to become the team’s full-time GM — or a fixture in a new-look structure pairing him with an executive focused on personnel."

A late-starting (and now expected to be methodical) process is set to yield the hiring of a new general manager in late May, at the earliest. It also feels like it could be looked back on as a token process that was always going to end in the inevitable place.

Barring something surprising, it sure feels like Brzezinski will be named the Vikings' new general manager when the Wilfs are good and ready to make it official.
