If one were to ask Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell or any of the national NFL insiders he has on speed dial about who will be starting under center for the team in 2026, an attempt would be made to convince the fanbase that the organization is holding a legitimate quarterback competition between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy this offseason.

But for someone like ESPN's Kevin Seifert, who attended one of the Vikings' OTA practice sessions earlier this week, the lack of legitimacy for the "battle" between Murray and McCarthy stuck out like a sore thumb.

After observing Minnesota's practice, Seifert shared what he saw out on the practice field at the TCO Performance Center.

"You can only have a genuine competition if there is actual uncertainty about who the best quarterback on the roster is. With the caveat that this was one day in May, with no pads and some drills performed at half speed, it is only fair to point out that the gap between the two quarterbacks was not close.

Murray made all of the best throws of the practice, demonstrating his downfield touch and accuracy. Nothing McCarthy did was objectionable, and one of his few incompletions -- a pass to the flat that cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. nearly intercepted -- occurred when two receivers drifted far too close to each other.

...Overall, the afternoon was a reminder that McCarthy could continue along the upward trajectory he established at the end of last season -- and still fall well short of matching Murray's experience, arm talent and potential to make big plays in the passing game."

Unsurprisingly, Kyler Murray leading the way in "competition" with J.J. McCarthy for Minnesota Vikings QB1 job

When Murray signed with the Vikings back in March, everyone knew it was to be Minnesota's starting quarterback next season. There were even reports that the Vikings wanted to sign him to a two-year contract before eventually agreeing to a one-year deal.

It would be pretty odd to sign a 28-year-old career starter to a two-year contract to be your backup quarterback, right?

So, if we can all tell from the outside that the quarterback competition between Murray and McCarthy is about as legit as a major Minnesota sports team winning a championship, imagine how the guys in a team's actual locker room feel about it.

Why must O'Connell do this song and dance?

Why is it so hard for the Vikings to say that they believe it would be best for McCarthy's development for him to be the backup behind Murray in 2026?

If this happened and McCarthy responded negatively, then that would just be more confirmation that he's probably not going to be Minnesota's long-term solution at the position.

Vikings fans might get caught drinking too much of the purple Kool-Aid at times, but they're not dumb.

Don't spit in their faces and say it's raining.

Everyone knows what's really going on.
