The moment that Minnesota Vikings safety Jamal Adams went down with his injury in the 13-10 preseason win over the New York Giants, everyone knew it was not good news.
Adams suffered a non-contact knee injury in the Giants game and had to be carted off the field. Coming out of halftime, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell didn't know the severity of Adams' injury, but he said it didn't look good.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport confirmed O'Connell's worst fears and reported that Adams was diagnosed with a season-ending knee injury. Adams' season is officially over. Adams had one tackle and one tackle for loss in the preseason win.
Jamal Adams' injury leaves a major hole for Minnesota Vikings in Brian Flores’ defense
It's bad news for the Vikings, as they were hoping for big things from Adams. He was going to play a massive role in Brian Flores' defense.
All reports from his first training camp with the Vikings were that he was doing well. He was poised to have a big role as a safety on defense and might have been looking at a starting job,
This leaves the Vikings with some big questions about what to do about the safety position entering the second half of August. Joshua Metellus and Theo Jackson have been the projected starters, but Jay Ward and Jakobe Thomas are looking to make an impact as well.
It might lead Minnesota to look at other options. A reunion with Vikings legend Harrison Smith feels more inevitable than ever. O'Connell has mentioned over the last few months that the two have discussed Smith's future.
Adams' injury is a major blow for what looked like was going to be a great bounce-back year for him. Now the Vikings have to go back to the drawing board on what to do about the safety position.
