The 2024 NFL Draft might go down as one of the best quarterback draft classes in recent years. Unfortunately for the Minnesota Vikings, they look like the only one of the five teams to miss on their quarterback pick.
As we know, the Vikings spent the 10th overall pick on Michigan's J.J. McCarthy, who has not lived up to the hype so far. Before McCarthy's name was called by the commissioner, the Bears took Caleb Williams first overall, the Commanders took Jayden Daniels with the second pick, and the Patriots selected Drake Maye with pick No. 3.
The Vikings then had a choice at quarterback between McCarthy and Oregon's Bo Nix. They chose McCarthy, and two picks later, Nix went off the board. Those in Denver are quite happy with their choice, as Nix had the Broncos on the doorstep of reaching the Super Bowl in just his second season in the pros.

Meanwhile, McCarthy struggles to make any sort of positive impact when he's on the field. Broncos fans continue to be relieved they dodged the McCarthy bullet, with Sayre Bedinger of
FanSided's Broncos site, Predominantly Orange, pointing out just how fortunate Denver is to have landed Nix instead.
"McCarthy has been a disappointment. Even if he's still a young prospect, and even though injuries have been a factor, the selection of McCarthy (after trading up to get him) looks worse by the day," Bedinger wrote.
"The Bo Nix pick, on the other hand? After being laughed at in the moment by pretty much the entire NFL world, that pick is looking pretty smart... Entering year three, Nix has looked fantastic at Broncos training camp. He's taking a new level of command of the offense, and is poised for another huge step in the right direction."
It's hard to dispute any of that. While Nix certainly has a lot of help surrounding him in Denver, so does McCarthy, yet Nix has been able to make the best of his situation while McCarthy has done the opposite. McCarthy has been so underwhelming that Minnesota went out and signed Kyler Murray this offseason, and he'll probably win the starting gig over McCarthy. So yeah, not great.
What happens to McCarthy is still up in the air. Maybe the Vikings move on from him or maybe they continue to keep him on the roster and let him learn from the sidelines. Either way, the Broncos definitely lucked out that Minnesota took McCarthy instead of Nix. Vikings fans will get tired of hearing that but it's the truth.
