The Minnesota Vikings could be catching the Indianapolis Colts at exactly the right time for Justin Jefferson to finally deliver the monster receiving game his 2026 season has been missing.

Indianapolis cornerback Sauce Gardner is expected to miss time after suffering a mild calf strain in Sunday's loss to Tennessee, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport on Monday. Gardner hasn't officially been ruled out for Week 7, but his week-to-week diagnosis makes his availability against Minnesota look doubtful.

Jefferson enters Sunday with only 19 catches for 258 yards and three touchdowns in four appearances. An ankle injury cost him Minnesota's Week 4 win over Miami, but even when healthy, he hasn't produced a 100-yard game. Coming off a career-low 1,048 receiving yards in 2025, that's a disappointing start by Jefferson's absurd standards.

Vikings could attack Charvarius Ward with Justin Jefferson

Charvarius Ward becomes the obvious candidate to draw the toughest Jefferson assignments if Gardner sits. Ward is nobody's backup plan disguised as a starter. He's a former Pro Bowler with the length and physical coverage ability to challenge elite receivers.

Ward has also been excellent through six games. According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, quarterbacks have completed just seven of 18 passes into his coverage for 111 yards, zero touchdowns, and a 60.2 passer rating.

Kevin O'Connell still shouldn't treat Ward as a reason to steer away from Jefferson.

Indianapolis losing Gardner changes how much help defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo can devote elsewhere. Gardner and Ward together give the Colts two established outside corners.

Remove Gardner, and Minnesota can force Indianapolis to choose between leaving Ward isolated with Jefferson or shifting safety help toward No. 18, creating opportunities for Jordan Addison, Jauan Jennings, and T.J. Hockenson.

Jefferson already entered 2026 chasing more franchise history, but Minnesota's 5-0 start has strangely occurred without him taking over a game. His biggest outing remains eight catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns against Green Bay in Week 1.

A six-catch, 79-yard performance in New Orleans showed Jefferson's ankle was healthy enough before the bye. The next step should be volume. Minnesota shouldn't need gadgetry or a favorable corner to feature the best player on its offense.

The Vikings already watched Jefferson endure the least productive season of his career in 2025. Gardner's likely absence gives them a prime opportunity to make sure 2026 doesn't follow the same script.
