Minnesota Vikings fans all over social media are wondering what the quarterback situation will be for the team during the 2025 NFL season. They will almost certainly add another player at the position before the start of the season, but how will that shake up the order?
At the moment, it appears the Vikings are ready to go forward with J.J. McCarthy as their starter. That is a gamble since he's never taken an NFL regular-season snap, the young quarterback will need to get that experience eventually.
Some fans don't like that idea and would rather have a more established signal caller to lead the team this year. Coming off a 14-win season, there is some logic in wanting a team that is ready to push for a deep postseason run.
Minnesota Vikings QB2 for 2025 might already be on the team’s roster
However, what if a veteran quarterback isn't in the plans at all for the Minnesota Vikings? Going with McCarthy is rolling the dice but having another quarterback with extremely limited starting experience would be another gamble.
Brett Rypien is entering his sixth year in the NFL. Since joining the league, he started four games. Three of those starts were during his time with the Broncos and the other one was while he was with the Rams in 2023.
There is more reason for concern since during his 10 games played as a pro, he has thrown four touchdowns compared to nine interceptions and completed only 58.3 percent of his pass attempts for 950 total yards.
Although Rypien's experience is limited, Minnesota could decide to go forward with the 28-year-old passer as McCarthy's primary backup if they don't see an option that is a good fit and makes financial sense in free agency.
Rypien signed a one-year extension with the Minnesota Vikings this offseason worth $1.195 million. This small investment to bring a familiar quarterback back to the team makes sense for continuity but leaves the position with only two players for now.
Names like Aaron Rodgers and Kirk Cousins have been mentioned as quarterbacks to possibly join McCarthy in Minnesota, but neither of those players would likely fit the role of a mentor backup who won't make a dent in the team's salary cap space.
While it would be risky, the Minnesota Vikings have the option to have J.J. McCarthy as their starter and Brett Rypien as his backup. The team doesn't seem to be in any rush to sign a veteran, so this might be the plan after all.
