On Tuesday, the Minnesota Vikings officially named Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback. The announcement may not be surprising to fans who have followed the Vikings’ moves this offseason, but it may have been surprising due to how both quarterbacks performed during training camp.
With that, the timing of Tuesday’s announcement was unorthodox – especially since Murray chucked a pair of interceptions during Sunday’s night practice.
But in the end, the Vikings needed to make a decision in order to give Murray the time he needed to master Kevin O’Connell’s offense.

If the quarterback competition was the No. 1 topic discussed among Vikings fans, O’Connell’s offense hasn’t been far behind.
Since arriving in Minnesota in 2022, Kirk Cousins needed flashcards to memorize all of the details, and Joshua Dobbs, who is an actual rocket scientist, couldn’t pick it up before throwing Justin Jefferson a hospital ball during the 2023 season.
Nick Mullens was able to move the ball as the starting quarterback, but it was canceled out by a turnover problem. The carousel kept spinning when Sam Darnold played to an MVP-level in 2024, but that didn’t come without his share of struggles during training camp.
According to The Athletic’s Alec Lewis, Darnold’s turning point with the Vikings came on Aug. 14. While the Vikings were willing to see what McCarthy could do with first-team reps in the early stages of training camp, a torn meniscus in the preseason opener eliminated any competition Darnold had and gave him 100 percent of the practice reps, paving the way to immerse himself in O’Connell’s offense and lead Minnesota to a 14-win season.
Getting all of the starting reps didn’t help McCarthy succeed when he took over at the beginning of the 2025 season, and while Murray was brought in, he also lamented splitting reps, creating a firestorm during the offseason program.
It’s possible the Vikings believed it wouldn’t be an issue with Murray’s experience in the league, but it also became clear it was hurting his performance as camp continued.

While Murray was the favorite to win the job, his decision-making and accuracy kept him from stacking good practices together.
McCarthy had shown improvement from his disastrous 2025 campaign, but he also suffered from a lack of consistency, which kept him from capitalizing on the opportunity.
With a top-10 pick invested in McCarthy, it would have been understandable if the Vikings stayed the course to see if he had made a massive leap.
You could also argue that if both quarterbacks were in “a tie,” the Vikings could have gone with McCarthy, wondering if the momentum would carry him into the regular season.
But that window always had an expiration date. By getting a starter all of the reps now, the Vikings can decrease any acclimation period that Murray needs to succeed with his new team.
It also gets a giant distraction out of the way, as the first two weeks of camp have been dominated by quarterback debates.
Giving Murray the starting job may not guarantee he’ll succeed when the season arrives. But the Vikings couldn’t drag the competition any longer if they wanted whoever they chose at quarterback to play their best when the games begin to count.
