Less than 24 hours after he was among the Minnesota Vikings' inactives for the second time this season, J.J. McCarthy's tenure with the franchise came to a close when he was traded to the New York Giants this past Monday.

McCarthy getting traded began to feel inevitable ever since he was on the losing end of the Vikings' QB1 battle with Kyler Murray this summer. It wasn't a competition that many expected him to win, but not earning the job was something that truly felt like the final nail in the coffin for the young quarterback's career in Minnesota.

Now, McCarthy gets a fresh start with a Giants team that has plenty of their own quarterback questions. Will getting traded serve as a wake-up for the former Vikings signal-caller, or will New York become the next team to watch him fail to meet his potential?

J.J. McCarthy describes the Vikings' decision to trade him to the Giants as a "shock"

Currently, McCarthy is just trying to acclimate to the Giants as quickly as he can since he's likely going to be the team's No. 2 quarterback behind Jameis Winston as early as Sunday.

On Friday, the former Minnesota passer spoke to the local New York media for the first time, including ESPN's Jordan Raanan, who shared what McCarthy had to say about getting traded earlier this week.

"When I got the call here, it was a shock. I didn't anticipate it, but at the end of the day, it's an opportunity. It's an opportunity to take advantage of. And I love these guys already, and I can't wait to do it for them."

Despite being a member of Minnesota's roster less than a week ago, McCarthy didn't seem interested in talking much about his time with the Vikings and why things didn't end up going as well as everyone had hoped after they selected him with the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

"There's a multitude of things you could think of [why it didn't work out]. But at the end of the day, it's all in the past, and all I care about is what's important now. That next rep, that next meeting, that next game, and that's really all I'm focused on."

How soon could J.J. McCarthy get on the field for the Giants?

McCarthy has barely been a member of the Giants, but everyone is already wondering when his first opportunity to play for New York will end up happening this season.

Right now, Winston is the Giants' starter, and one would assume that he will remain in that role for at least a few more weeks to allow McCarthy to get more comfortable with the team's playbook.

New York has four more games until its bye in Week 8. If the Giants are unsatisfied with Winston's performance when it comes time for their bye week, don't be surprised if they give McCarthy a shot to start when they return in Week 9 for a road matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

However, we all know that injuries in football can derail any future plans that a team might have, so McCarthy could see the field sooner rather than later if Winston ends up suffering a notable injury in one of New York's next four games before their bye in Week 8.

There's also a chance that Winston could play well during the Giants' next four matchups, which would likely mean that McCarthy would remain an observer on the sideline. That wouldn't be a terrible outcome for the former Vikings quarterback either.

McCarthy is still very raw, and his tools need a lot of adjusting before he can even have a chance at getting anywhere close to reaching his full potential. So spending most of the 2026 season on the bench would be far from the worst thing in the world for his career.

Whatever happens, there are going to be a lot of eyes watching McCarthy during the next few weeks to see if Minnesota made a mistake by trading him, or if their decision to move on from him after less than three seasons was the right call.
