Now that reports are spreading that the Minnesota Vikings aren't expected to bring Sam Darnold back for the 2025 NFL season, all eyes turn to young quarterback J.J. McCarthy to take control of the quarterback position.
McCarthy won the National Championship at Michigan before coming to the Vikings. His efficient style of play combined with sprinkling huge plays into the mix helped the Wolverines bring the trophy home.
Minnesota hopes McCarthy can do the same thing for the Vikings. When they selected him No. 10 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, fans were drooling at the idea of him leading the purple and gold to a Super Bowl one day.
Notable analyst raves about J.J. McCarthy’s potential with the Minnesota Vikings in 2025
J.J. McCarthy is expected to start his first regular season game in 2025 after missing all of last season with a knee injury. His mobility and awareness will be a huge asset for Coach of the Year Kevin O'Connell in the offense.
During a recent appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit had some very generous praise for Minnesota's young quarterback and his potential when paired with the Vikings' coach.
"You're putting Kevin O'Connell with JJ McCarthy and the talent that they have on that Vikings roster...To me the Vikings go to another level with JJ McCarthy."Kirk Herbstreit
If the Vikings can secure the trenches to protect J.J. McCarthy, the sky could be the limit for the young man. Having weapons like Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson combined with a brilliant offensive mind like Kevin O'Connell is a recipe for success for the young quarterback.
McCarthy is only 22 years old and will likely take some lumps as a starting quarterback in the NFL. Minnesota will likely look for an experienced passer to act as a mentor and backup for the young quarterback this offseason to protect their season.
Minnesota Vikings fans will need to be patient with McCarthy since it could take him time to find his footing in the NFL. This is especially true if he is expected to lead the purple and gold to a successful 14-win regular season like Sam Darnold was able to do last year.
While regular season wins are great, perhaps it will be the postseason where J.J. McCarthy can help to take the Vikings to the next level.
