Vikings takeaway No. 4

An extension looks smart.

When the Minnesota Vikings signed safety Josh Metellus to a two-year extension worth up to #13 million, a lot of fans were left scratching their heads as to why the team would focus on extending a backup who primarily played special teams in the past.

In his first two seasons with Minnesota, Metellus played a total of 70 defensive snaps with that number rising to 253 in 2022. Metellus has already played 300 defensive snaps through five games this year.

Metellus has carved out a great role in the Vikings defense. playing a joker-type role. He has been flying all over the field doing anything asked of him, as evidenced by his eight total tackles and three quarterback hits with one sack against the Bears this week.

His value is even higher considering former first-round draft pick Lewis Cine was a healthy inactive this week. Finding value in the roster can be a challenge and exceeding expectations instead of failing to reach them is praise-worthy.
