Prediction No. 9

Ty Chandler will replace Kene Nwangwu’s spot on the roster

One of the biggest mysteries during training camp was Kene Nwangwu’s injury, and we finally got some clarity when the Vikings put him on injured reserve with a back injury. But Nwangwu’s camp was reportedly unhappy with that decision, and it could be because they know he may not have a roster spot when he comes back.

That’s because the NFL is trying to eliminate the kick returner as owners adopted a new rule this offseason that allows returners to call for a fair catch inside the 25-yard line and receive an automatic touchback.

Fans might believe that returners may just decide to run the ball out anyway, but coaches may lean in favor of safety. By calling for a fair catch at the five-yard line, the offense is guaranteed to get the ball on their own 25-yard line, which eliminates the risk of an early stop or a turnover.

This puts players like Nwangwu in a tricky position. They could still be serviceable as a kick returner but now they need to prove their worth in order to justify their roster spot.

The Vikings tried to showcase Nwangwu this offseason, but his injuries wasted a golden opportunity. With fellow running back Ty Chandler possessing the same speed and the ability to play the running back position, the Vikings may opt to keep Chandler, which could lead to Nwangwu playing his last snap in Minnesota.
