Draft pick the Minnesota Vikings got right No. 1

DeWayne McBride - RB (UAB)

  • Selected: 222nd (7th Round)
  • Consensus Big Board Ranking: 139th (5th Round)

When it came time to make their final selection in this year's NFL Draft, the Vikings were probably surprised that DeWayne McBride was even still available. But he was, and Minnesota made sure to use their pick on him while they still had the chance.

With Dalvin Cook unlikely to remain with the Vikings for the 2023 season, the team opted to replace him with someone in McBride, who finished second in the nation in rushing yards in 2022 with 1,713.

To make his performance during the 2022 season even more impressive was the fact that he averaged 7.4 yards per carry in addition to rushing for a total of 19 touchdowns.

This wasn't a one-time thing for McBride either, as he also rushed for 1,371 yards and 13 touchdowns during his 2021 campaign at UAB as well. The kid knows how to make plays when the football is put in his hands.

By passing on McBride with both of their two selections in the fifth round this year, Minnesota took a gamble. But this gamble ended up paying off for the Vikings as they were still able to use their final pick on the talented running back.
