Vikings Player No. 3

Alexander Mattison - RB

Following the 2022 campaign, Alexander Mattison became a free agent for the first time in his NFL career. Before the 2023 offseason, Mattison spent his first four years in the league as the Vikings' No. 2 running back behind Dalvin Cook, and some expected him to leave Minnesota to see if he could compete for a starting job elsewhere.

Well, that starting job ended up actually being with the Vikings, who, for some reason, believed Mattison could be their newest No. 1 running back, and they wound up re-signing him to a two-year contract.

Unsurprisingly, Mattison has not been able to live up to the expectations that come with being a top running back this season. In 15 games during the 2023 campaign, the Minnesota running back has carried the ball 173 times for 676 yards (3.9 yards per attempt) and no touchdowns, in addition to catching 29 passes for 189 yards and three scores.

Now, Mattison is still 25-years-old, so it's possible that another NFL team could convince themselves that they could utilize him better in their offense than the Vikings have in theirs.

If Minnesota gets a call at any point in the offseason about what it would take to acquire Mattison in a trade, they need to get that deal done as quickly as possible.

The return package shouldn't even really be a factor in the Vikings getting a trade completed, as they should just be satisfied with getting anything in exchange for a backup running back.

Some might view this as harsh, but Minnesota cannot begin another season with Mattison as the top guy on their running back depth chart.
