Reason No. 1

Lack of interest from other NFL teams this offseason

At the age of 24, Alexander Mattison had his first opportunity to hit free agency this offseason. Given his age and his lack of wear-and-tear during his four seasons in the NFL, some thought a team might throw a nice chunk of money his way and at least bring him in to compete for their starting running back job.

But, in a bit of a surprising move, Mattison re-signed with the Vikings on the very first day of the 2023 free-agency period. Minnesota and the veteran running back agreed to a two-year contract worth $7 million.

Before the start of the 2022 NFL season, at least 12 teams from around the league reportedly contacted the Vikings about a possible trade for Mattison. So what happened to all of this interest when he became a free agent earlier this year?

It's possible that Mattison wasn't looking for a change of scenery, and he just wanted to get a deal done with Minnesota as quickly as he could.

But still, it's at least a bit concerning that there were no reports about a team attempting to outbid the Vikings for a young running back with a bunch of tread left on his tires.
