Takeaway No. 2

Mekhi Blackmon getting more first-team defense reps

Earlier this week, Vikings rookie cornerback Mekhi Blackmon was given some opportunities on the practice field with the first-team defense. On Thursday night, Blackmon continued to get more reps with Minnesota's top defensive unit.

Blackmon and fellow former USC teammate Jordan Addison have been having some intense 1-on-1 battles during this year's camp, and it seems to be benefiting both of them. Addison has been getting rave reviews already and Blackmon is clearly shooting up the depth chart.

Plus, with the recent injury to Andrew Booth Jr., the rookie cornerback is only going to get more opportunities, and by the sounds of it, some of these opportunities should continue to come with the first-team defense.

As a rookie, Blackmon is certainly going to experience some growing pains. But even in his first-ever training camp, it seems like he has quickly impressed the Vikings' defensive coaches.

If Blackmon continues on his current path, he'll likely open up the 2023 regular season as a vital part of Minnesota's plans in the secondary.
